Hi,

First post, so go easy on me!

I got the track bug last October, with my 350Z. Endless fun, but I'm looking for 1) Even more focused car 2) A cheaper track-day fix in terms of consumables.... so I'm looking for an R400, but £25K for a weekend/track car is outside my budget for the moment (and I don't want to settle for a lower powered cat that I know I'll grow out of within a year).

Have any of you been in the same predicament, and solved it by joint buying+owning a car with friend/family/like-minded individual?

If so:

Did it work out well?
What were the biggest hang-ups?
Would you recommend it?

Many thanks!

You could get a Roadsport which will still be one of the quickest cars on any track day if driven well and will be about £12k so should fit your budget and be yours outright.

If it were me, it'd need to be someone I trust pretty well to share a track car although I assume you'd insure it for track days and work on a "you bend it you mend it basis". Main problem comes if the other person wants out and you don't.

I own 50% of a 1.8 Supersport with a friend who I have known for a number of years. We bought it on an '02 plate 12 months ago with 3k & have put on another 8,000 miles since.

We had both been going on about gettinmg a Caterham for ages; but both our budgets were sub £10k. Then one of our mates suggeswted we buy together. We thought about it, went and had a look... Chose one. We then went away, talked about every eventuality, damage liability etc, put it all in writing & collected it a week later.

We have not fallen out about anything at all and are both still chuffed to bits with it.

We both went 50:50 on purchase price, tax, MOT, servicing etc... Mileage is limited to 6k / annum and we sat down, looked at our diaries & who has the car when. We generally base it on Weds to Tues & leave the car as we found it (ie with a full tank of fuel). We have agreed in principle that it will only go on track with both of us there & we plan to go on our first track day this spring.

The key is to go with somebody who you respect & trust; but more importantly whose driving you have confidence in...

PM me if you need further info.

Charlie

I bought my 10yr old Caterham last summer, and swapped for my brother's Elise in October, then swapped back two weeks ago. Co-ownership is great as halves the pain of any unexpected big bills, plus you get to appreciate 2 cars, and whichever one you have after a while you look forward to trying the other again. Plus you can swap around and compare notes on trackdays. And ring each other up midweek and get all enthused about driving experiences. I wish we'd thought of it a few years ago! Best to avoiod insurers with an admin charge per postcode swop, as you have to pay it on each car, each swop. That's the only hang-up really. You do have to trust the other guy with 'your baby' though.

Thx for the replies, good suggestions all round.

I think it does come down to trust and finding the right person. Unfortunately I only have one friend (BiL) who I would think of sharing with, and I asked him this weekend, but he's about 10 years behind me in the old age/career ladder, so coughing up 8 grand for him just isn't an option at the mo'!

I think I will look at fully owning a Roadsport as a first foray into Cat ownership, and see how that goes... am going to the Midlands branch on the 11th April. Can't wait!

You can buy an ex racecar (Graduate spec Roadsport) for circa £11k - that's only £5k ish each...it'll be track ready too....
