Hello All,
I'm thinking of moving to France, but I know very little about the different areas.
Can anyone recommend where to look?
I love Paris, but I realise that it would be like trying to get a place in London, so that's out on a cost basis.
What's the "Leeds" of France? Lyon?

I don't mind being in a town as long as there's a city close by (Keeping with the Leeds thing, think Otley.)
In fact I'd quite like an old farmhouse-type place, but I'm on a tight budget, so I'll get what I'm given. Also, I'm a young single bloke, so I need some nightlife/socialising.

Normandy area seems quite appealing geographically.
Wherever I end up, I DON'T want to end up in one of those ex-pat Ghettoes where everyone speaks English and there's Pie&Peas and Only Fools n' 'orses on down the pub. I've got that here.

I replied in your other thread too.

£130k bought this:

2 hectares of land! We bought in the Loir valley area (not the Loire with the Chateaux, just north of there).

To avoid the Brits, avoid parts Brittany, Normandy, all of Dordogne and Provence. France is a big country - plenty of places to choose from.

You will need to speak French to survive outside the areas above. You don't need to be fluent (I'm not!), but if you can break the ice in French the locals are ridiculously friendly. They will still mis-understand you if you don't accent correctly, but at least you'll get by.

Good luck - PM me if you need any help.

Im jealous !! I dont want to be stuck in this country, its a*se. Got a house in Burgundy waiting to be worked on and loved but cant right now. Seriously tempted to see if I can transfer to the French Army, I hear the LeClerc tank is not too shabby at all. Cant really help on the "Leeds of France" issue, I personally love the countryside. Been in to Lyon, Dijon, Paris and various towns nearby(ish) to us and wouldnt want to live there at all.

Good luck with deciding though, good advice from Puggit with the language and stuff

Keep us posted

p.s: still jealous cry

You are looking to live in France or have a second home? As long as you dont need to start your own business here then you should be ok.
I know many poeple seem to go on about how bad the UK is now but we would gladly move back there as France is not a bed of roses having set up companies and lived in both countries. France does not favour the entrepreneur.

Hello Jason, Agreed we've just come back from a "fact finding mission" and have generally found that taxes and the price you pay for the equiv of Nat Ins is a bit frightening....
