Ok got it down to a few cars now that i will be buying for a project.

Civic Type R
Accord Type R
MR2 Ser2
A3 quattro
or the A3 1.8T sport

Now my question is for the sport.

Do the wheel arches on a 99 spec T sport take 18ich wheels ok?

I currently have a Sline 170 and it has 18s bbs and tbh they make the car. If i was to go with the cheaper option audi i could then justify spending on it to make it better.

Answer to this will probely make my mind up with which to get.

Slightly off topic, but what do you think of the sline 170 and which gearbox has it got ? As the other half is thinking of one as a company car. Unfortunately she'd also like a reasonably smooth ride, not sure this is too likely with the 18's and sport suspension ?

"Best barn diesel" - does sound like a ringing endorsement!

tbh the 1.9 sport diesel is going like hotcakes from what i have heard.

For me tho:

Sline 170

Suspension is nice but on backroads bumpy and sometimes anoying for the passengers.
Manual over flappy paddles much more usable.
Get a audi dealership to make the passenger doors open on ONE click of the fob.
I average 40+ miles.
Also if she can get her to get the BBS wheels they make one hell of a difference, my friend has one with the standards not as nice.

I like the sline 170 myself but if i was to actualy buy one i probely would not. There are to many things that bug me about the car. For pure fun yes for day to day living with no.

I hope i have helped a little best thing for her is to try it out. I live in ipswich if you ever want to try ours you can.

Heres a picy with the wheels of ours.

what sort of project? absolute power, tack car, fun car, bling mobile?

track i would pick the type R/ MR2
the 1.8T is stupidly tunable. but trust me i wouldn't bother on a FWD car if you want it to be fun.
A3 quattro... well there are quite a few variants. 1.9tdi, 2.0 tdi, 1.8T, 3.2V6 just off the cuff and the price varies wildly.. They A3 runs haldex as well.

I was looking at the 1.8T quattro as its fairly cheap to buy.

Thanks for the offer Philip, unfortunately it's a bit far.

Some good feedback though especially on the gearbox and I must admit we're not quite so sure anymore, but will be test driving one next week.

Good luck with your project!

thanks.

Also another thing i forgot to mention is the running gear on the 170 its a pain in the butt. If you wife likes to drive slowish she wont notice it but the days when you take it out for a blat you will. Example:

Drove it the other day with the ELS off and thought hey not done a 0-60 in this yet. Stoped car on a deserted back road (did i say road ment um airfile) got the revs up let the clutch out and BANG crunch and pop later the cars moving. When all the power goes to the wheels in full flow you get a horrible how to explain this i would say crunching noise whilst its trying to grip. As soon as it does it all goes fine but its those moments when its not and you think to urself hmm have i just broken something.

I have been told that its a problem with the 170s and to live with it.

but like i said see if she can get a A3 1.9 TDi special edition.

They do it in the tasty sportback version.
