147 owners look in ....is Alfa 147 Reliable (2nd hand 50+k)
Discussion
They are reliable cars but can be the victims of abuse like any other car.
Check service history and if at all in doubt walk away.
Belts AND tensioners every 36k/3yrs is a must as are regular oil changes. If the car looks at all neglected I wouldn't bother as the owner probably let it run low on oil which kills the bottom end.
Check everything works, including aircon if fitted.
Listen for any clunking from the front or rear suspension....not that expensive to replace the wishbones but a haggling point.
...and my personal opinion is to avoid the Sillyspeeds.

My 147 2.0 manual 5dr has now done 99,000 miles. I bought it brand new in 2001.
The cambelt went at 47K, whilst it was booked in for a service.
Other than that it's been fantastic and very reliable.
I might sell it soon as I need a bigger car - PM me if you're interested.

I agree with WRINX. These are great cars. I have had two from new and they have been great. Do make sure they have been serviced on time and oil is checked regularly. Replace oil every 5,000 or 6,000 miles. I myself have replaced belts and variator every 30,000 miles. You can get them done done for a reasonable price (£450-£500 including full service and brake pads replaced) from an Alfa dealer if you shop around.
Good luck and enjoy,
Chris
