Hello,

I've just bought a MK2 Golf so I'm unfamiliar with the above.

When the ignition is turned to postition 2 prior to starting the oil, water and possibly a few other warning lights seem to flash in sequence. They stop when the engine is started but the oil light seems to flash a couple more times.

Is this a diagnostic feature or should I have been worried? What do the lights mean?

By the way, this is the car I picked up last night - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/538527.htm - so far so good!

Thanks

Is it the main big red symbol in the middle?

I have a 2.0 audi coupe which shares many common parts with the Mk2 golf (consider it the fat lazy cousin of the golf hehe) and I have this when I start up too.

You should start worrying when it flashes at you whilst your driving because that means it's about to spit the coolant out everywhere. frown

No, it's not the large central warning lights, it's the water and oil I think.

It's been a few hours since I started her up...

It drives perfect and they disappear a few seconds after starting up.

It would be nice to know what they mean (if anything) though.

Cheers

Have you checked your oil and water levels?

Just to clarify, when I turn the ignition I get he ABS light, Oil light, Parking brake and Battery light come on (they are not flashing) and in the centre the the coolant temp warning light is flashing.

As soon as the car is started the ABS, Oil Light, Battery light and flashing Temperature light all go off and the only one left on is the parking brake light.

Just for the record, I am not typing this to make you feel silly but instead just typing what happens when I start mine up so as you can compare.

Are these lights still flashing once the car is started?

I'll have to check later.

I have checked all the levels, everything is fine.

None of the lights stay on when the engine has been started.

Thanks!

I think so long as the lights arean't on when the car is started you should be fine. smile

I shall ask a friend who runs a 16 valver golf what his is like on start up for you.

Will have a look in mine when I finish tonight - don't know if they flash or are solid before it starts.

this all sounds perfectly normal-3 red led's should come on when you turn ignition on; one for charging(continuous),one for coolant-level(flashing),and the third for oil-pressure(flashing).
first two should extinguish immediately on starting, the last one should go out almost as quickly as others if engine is healthy.
if oil-light and/or a buzzer come on while driving this should mean low oil-pressure,but more likely is just a fault in the electrical-circuit somewhere....

Thats normal, as long as the lights go out soon after everything is ok.
