e39 rear wiper unit

hiya all,
got a problem with the rear wiper, its a 530d tourer.
when you open the glass bit the wiper is quite stiff
to move, feels a bit seized,
whats the way to go about sorting it.
does the black triangular cover pull off.
is it safe to spray the unit with wd 40.
any advice would be great,, ta

Be careful! Last week my mate managed to smash the rear glass of his A3 trying to sort a seized wiper! got a problem with the rear wiper, its a 530d tourer.
