Z3 buying advice...

Afternoon all!
So, I'm considering buying a Z3 to replace my much loved Alfa 145. My budget is around £7-8000, with a little leeway perhaps for a good example.
I've pretty much ruled out the 1.9 and 2.0 versions altogether, as I would like something that it is a little more powerful than my current 155bhp! My searches have been for the 2.2 or 2.8 models, as any higher BHP ones are unfortunately too much for me to afford insurance on at 22. I have found some pretty nice ones for around my budget though, and although there are much cheaper ones around, I would like as new and low mileage as feasible, certainly no older than my current '99.
So hopefully I will be able to find one of the later 2.8 models, are these decent ones? What is the performance like on them? Is the handling fun and responsive, and is it going to bite my head off if I get a little 'spirited' on a back road?! This will be my first rear wheel drive car, so I am a little apprehensive.
Also, what sort of issues should I look for when seeing them in the flesh? Are there any easy to spot things that I should look out for? Also any options that are great to have?

I would keep away from the 2.2. I had one many years back and found it a bit thirsty on fuel considering the performance you get. You will find that your having to use the whole rev range to get going. However the engine is typical of a BMW straight six very smooth with great delivery.
Opt for the 2.8 or 3.0litre. My nxt car was the 3.0 and it's was a stonking machine. After that I got E46 M3 and now my current love Z4MC..lol.
