I fear the words "stepper" and "clean" are gonig to appear here quite a lot!

Yes it's a common occurance (though I've only seen ot once in 20,000 miles!).

The stepper whatsit on the back of the plenum need a clean. Excuse my vague reply, the only time I've seen this the car was going in for a service anyway so I didn't bother (as they should sort it in the service) and it came back fixed.

It's been mentioned before, search the archiove for "stepper motor"

Cheers,

Andy

You appear to know there is no choke, it's effect is mimicked by lengthening the fuel spray when cold.

The 'choke' stuck open on me for the first time about six weeks ago.

I cleaned engine temp and airflow meter connectors, then disconnected the battery to reset the ECU. Problem gone, I did expect to have to change a sensor at least, but so far no repeat. Until it happens again I won't be able to trace the true cause I suppose.

I did clean the soot of my sparks, which was quite considerable and caused poor idle, but a good run might have sufficed.

Similar symptoms - had to accelerator halfway in to avoid stalling. The black smoke out of the back at some traffic lights was clearly causing a guy in an open MG-F behind me some discomfort

BTW - This took me by surprise, big thanks to Ewelme who suggested by phone that I try this before having the car towed .

Whoops! If chrimsonchim's interpretation is right and you just have dodgy idle speed, ignore what I wrote and do what he wrote. It's common, not really warranty work, but flutter you eyelashes and they might do it for you - a 5min job.

So, your ACE dearler fixed it did they?

Did they clean the S.M.? - BTW it's not a service item.

When you pick it up next time ask what they did. Good luck.
