I have a '56 VXR 'Ro and was looking at simply changing both back boxes to stainless, to increase the noise and something that looks a little better. I don't want to spend a fortune hence only the back box change.

Luckily I have a really good custom exhaust manufacturer close by.

Question is, is there an additional muffler on the cental pipes? If I change the back boxes only, can I expect a noise that will at least make the neighbours curtains twitch? Or would I be better just doing a full cat back...(more money)

Cheers
Ross

I bought a pair of rear sections from someone on here (sorry, can't remember who!). They're essentially stainless straight sections to twin outlets and bolt up to the joint at approx rear axle level.

Sounds quite nice and not too loud, but certainly make a difference - have had several people comment on the sound of the car since I fitted them. I had quotes of around £350-400 to make up something similar from specialist exhaust places, but got these for rather less!

NB - there will now follow a long thread about why you need headers, remaps, full systems, etc etc in order to make your car sound "right" rolleyes

I remember the straight throughs for sale (think they were on Ebay), that not screw your fuel consumption? (I know it does about 19 anyway hehehe)

As you say there are lot of mods to make your car sound right, but I want something right for my pocket too

A mate just got his scooby done and that was a new centre pipe and rear for £175, so your quotes fit in where I thought they would cheers.

Might be a bit more than you are looking for, but there is a complete Milltek in the classified on PH.

I was at the fish yesterday and met the Muppet. He did exactly this to his car, removed back boxes etc and all he could say when he heard mine or the wortec was he wished his sounded like that

save your money and do the full cat-back and enjoy

The only advantage to removing the centre boxes and replacing them with straight pipes welded in is that it is cheap and easy if you can weld and have means of getting the car up to a reasonable height to work on.

The disadvantage is that the sound of the car then relies on pot luck. Mine is OK, not as good as a Wortec etc. I did the same thing to a 2.9 XR4x4 Sierra years ago and it sounded sh*t, but 2.8 Capris sounded great.

Jimb0 removed the back-box from his CV8 and it sounded great from outside the car, but it droned and boomed inside, sufficient to get him to invest in headers, big flow cats and a good system.

Sometimes "cheap" doesn't equal "good value"!!

The way to get the sound you want is to listen to other cars then buy what you think suits you best.

I don't think I'd go straight through, replacement mufflers just.
I need to speak to the guy, he gets a really good press and knows his stuff, so i'll see what he says. with local guy I can also do it in stages if I want too.
Thanks for tips...

Went with replacing the rear back boxes for straight throughs with a 6" x 4" Oval tip at each side.
Looks and sounds a lot better than it did in "stealth" mode.

The centre boxes must take quite a bit of the noise out too as it wasn't that loud when we took the back boxes off completely.
