Just had the good news that the chim needs a new set of rings at the young age of 45,000 miles. Not dead on it feet but using a fair bit of oil and seems down on power.

I have done a fair bit to the car this year, ap race brakes, nitrons, camm, starter, clutch, loads of other bits.

Question is, when should i call it quits and trade up. Should i stick with it since i figure there is very little elese to do after the ring job?

Depends whether you use your head or your heart. How much does it mean to you? But if you trade up, you'll lose a chunk in depreciation.

Finger's crossed for the chassis, then!

I'd get the rings done soon (sure it's the rings and not something on the top?) and wait until spring to make a decision. Got to be easier/less painful on the trade in to have this fault sorted. True you would need to make an estimate of cost to do versus what you'd be out of pocket on the trade if you didn't do it. Setting a milestone helps take the emotion out of the should I / shouldn't I trade up decision.

I was shocked at the price, Steve Howard say around £500 for all the work. A lot less than I feared, I am getting new bearings and other bit for that.

I have also decided to have the ACT carbon fibre trumpets done along with a modified intake buterfly.

With new rings and some induction work it may sway my descision

Decision made then in my book...

You know you don't want to part with it after all the work you've done on it.

I'd sell it and buy a Tuscan Racer

Or better still, keep it and get your company to sponsor someone else's Tuscan racer

Doesn't sound that bad. I had some work done on my 390SE motor (crank regrind, rebore, new pistons, shells etc. - full engine rebuild) and even though the only thing I didn't do was the actual machining, it still cost me £800 in parts and machining.
You're looking at a day's labour (£350?) just to get the engine out and back in, and that's if nothing goes wrong...

Could posts like this come with a warning?

I keep hearing funny noises now. And that smell wasn't there yesterday.

Quick, where do I buy 2 tons of cotton wool???

I think problems like there are rare. I purchased the car with 36k on the clock so do now how it was treated before me (has full TVR history).

There are no noises or smoke it just uses some oil, I am doing this to get the most power possible and to ensure the car goes strong for another 50k.

After this I am hoping I will have on of the most sorted chim. in the world!!
