Anyone got any pearls of wisdom on masking the headlights for European driving ? There are normally guide marks ... but not on the Monaro.

I presume common and sense and guesswork unless anyone has a cast iron technique. I am guessing not an issue in Aus !!

I know the beam benders I got when heading to Denmark, had very comprehensive instructions. Both for specific headlight shapes, and generic instructions to cover most other possibilities.

This kind of thing http://www.travel-spot.co.uk/products/eurolites.ht... looks good for projector lights.

I don't bother either. I never bother about the GB sticker either.

I have done the same for daylight driving. Snag is, if you actually drive at night it isn't just the local constabulary you upset, especially down dark country lanes.

I have normally just used masking tape, works a treat and costs zip. Just a bit of pain when the masking area isn't marked out.

Agree, I used black insulation tape. Took about 1/2 an hour, I masked up the upper left hand side of the beam pattern with the lights on facing the back wall of my garage.

Just driven the car uk-calais-luxembourg-koblenz-amsterdam-bruge and back home again over 6 days for a Blondie and B52's tour. What a trip! Car loves to cruise at 125 mph and I regularly had it up to 170 on the de-restricted parts of the autobahn, playing with some great machinery on the way. Averaged 22 mpg (according to the dash) quite frankly I'm amazed I never get more than 20 mpg in the UK and never get anywhere near the speeds that i did abroad. What a car!

Ba*%"$d!

I'm going on holiday to the south of France next week and can't take the 'ro; have to take the Nissan Patrol... Wont get anywhere near 125 (kph perhaps?)
Have always said that the fuel over there is of higher quality than that over here, and their roads are better. Still, so long as the sun is shining and the beer is cheap when I go, won't be too disappointed. Just can't get the tent and all the crap in the back of the 'ro. Perhaps should have bought the 04 model.....
Wish I was going to do your trip!

Thing to take note of is that the fuel costs inside mainland europe just now are a little higher than the UK too, it's been averaging between 1.55e and 1.65e for 95RON now for the last month around Aachen where I'm based in Germany...

Now this raises an interesting question. Friend of mines knows someone who made detailed figures when touring France on a motorbike, pretty much proved that you get more out of the tank than in the UK!?!?

You only have to smell the stuff to know its different. Far be it for me to suggest that its in both the fuel companies and the governments interest to give us the poor quality stuff so we buy more of it.. No, that would imply the lying, thieving b'stards know what they're doing, surely not!!!!

When I took the ro to Paris a few months ago I used the sticky jobbies mentioned above from Halfords. I also used the metallic GB sign.

The car got a lot of attention from the gendarmerie at service stations and I am sure that if I didn't have the kit on they would have done me. They have ZERO sense of humour and ZERO tolerance.

Yo JJ. We're off down to south of France next week too. Wasn't sure whether to take my Ro or the Discovery. Could get away with it in the Ro as we're not camping and I've got an early big boot car. Would be nice to pose about down there I guess. My last Disco broke on way home last year so I got a new one out of Land Rover. Better luck this year I hope!

Talking about driving in Europe, anyone know how I get my speedo to display KPH instead of MPH?

Should be adjustable on the start up screen, adjusts the digital display and dial.

Lewis07 - Take the 'ro! I'll look out for you, there certainly won't be two down there. Fezzas probably 10 a penny down there. I would love to be able to take mine down, but its not the end of the world. At least theres loads of room in the Patrol, and the aircon is cold enough to freeze the nuts off a brass monkey! Have a good holiday!

Taking the vxr8 to the south of france end of next week, took the nissan patrol last time, need comfort and speed now, with all these ro's floating around europe I will have to keep an eye out. Will take some beam benders just in case, and hopefully back in time for santa pod. (will have to save up for fuel by the sounds of it !!)

You go on holiday to relax yourself and stretch your legs - I always find hire cars so boring - so why not take the car as well and let it enjoy its self properly too!

Agree that the roads are less congested and way better than over here, allowing higher average speeds end to end for a trip and great opportunities for short (ish...) very high speed blasts now and again. Policy I tend to adopt on the autobahn is to only really gas it when there is no traffic in either lane up ahead for some distance. The possibility of someone pulling out infront who hasn't seen you coming up behind at serious leptons is always there. If there are a few vehicles in the inside lane I make sure I approach with my headlights on and my foot hovering over the brake pedal as I pass, just in case something happens, which did, twice....

In the first instance someone in a small hatchback wandered out into the fast lane to go past a line of 2 or three lorries, I hit the brakes, the 'ro pulled up straight with no problems - but the one thing that really shocked me was the (unsecured) heavy suitcase on the seat behind me leaving the seat and crashing into my backrest eek

In the second one it was the same scenario (other than the suitcases were now held in place with the rear belts), but I was approaching faster and knew I really had to stand on the brakes - full ap's all round thankfully. I was going to have to hit them hard and thought that it might unsettle the rear end and make the car unstable (a specific problem I've has with the car recently) but since I've had the lower springs and gas rear shocks fitted by Monkfish, I'm still here

The Monaro attracted a lot of attention from the locals, the Wortec focus pac exhaust note sounds incredible, all tunnel opportunities were exploited

The Blondie and B52's shows were awesome too. Been a fan of these new wave/punk bands since school days, with them playing at 3 venues during the same week, it seemed an opportunity too good to miss. Debbie Harry still looks f*****g gorgeous cool

You can change from MPH to KPH with the car on the move, no problem, good for comparisons, plus you can show your pasenger the needle go off the end of the scale
