Hi all

I bought a 530d a couple of weeks ago - 97k miles with full history.

I've noticed a couple of times now it feels lumpy for first couple of mins from cold. Feels like it's miss firing (if that's possible on a diesel?)

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers in advance,
Boon

sound like your injectors might need reconditioning.

have a look on bmwland forum and have a look for posts such as injectors, or smooth running control..

theres full info on there

happened to me.

Injectors 3 and 4 (out of 6) gone.

diagnosed by independant servicer with "clean burn" test or something.

Bad news is that each injector is about £280, so 2 new was £700 all in.

fixed though...

Could be glowplugs on their way out. I had my injectors re-conned for £160 the set and fitted them in an evening.

Cheers all, it hasn't done it again since so I'll leave it for now and see if it happens again. Would dodgy injectors not affect running right through the rev-range though rather than just at cold-start?

Well... I think it might be more than injectors. yikes

It's been fine ever since this original post andI drove to work this morning and parked up without any hiccups at all. Came out this evening jumped in and set off...felt lumpy through the works carpark. Drove out onto the road and I could hear a clatter from the engine bay opened the window and it was quite loud and increased in relation with revs.

I looked in the rear view mirror and it was like a smoke screen!

Pulled in and called the AA. He couldn't identify the problem but said an injector/turbo seal/egr valve were possibles. It sounded terrible at idle. Then he took the plastic cover off and asked me to start it again and it sounded a lot better - and the lumpiness had disappeared. However after 5 mins or so at idle it started smelling 'oily/diesely' and producing quite a bit of smoke again.

We turned it off and arranged for recovery to the garage I bought from.

Some 30 mins later when recovery guy turned up, i started it again to get it on there and it seemed perfect again.

God knows what it could be...

Any ideas? I can see this getting expensive. Hopefully the warranty/dealer's good will will cover it.

Haven't had the smoke screen, the extra noise etc but until the last service a thousand or so miles ago did have the rough running at start up. It appeared as though it was running on 3 cylinders for 15 or so seconds (I have only 4 on a 320d). As part of the inspection 1 they added some diesel treatment and it seems to have resolved the 'issue'. If it's behaving now and not puffing out smoke could be worth a fiver at Halfords to chuck in one of the diesel injector cleaners.
