Thinking of buying a V6 4-Motion

Hi all, thinking seriously about buying the above as my daily runner in the next month or two, has anyone got any advice on what to look for when buying, running costs, any problems or headaches? Generally - what's it like to own one of these and would you recommend it?

I had one. very good car and nice v6 sound.

only thing i did not like was the 22mpg average.

had problems with temp sensor, rear diff, front bushes and spring but all replaced under warranty.

I had one for 3 years .... very sensitive throttle coupled with sharp clutch made smooth driving an issue. 22mpg was about what I got on average in SW London.

Lovely engine sound and power from zero revs thanks to the torque. Quick ' ish but never felt rapid - if you know what I mean. I drove an old VR6 that felt quite a bit quicker.

Handles really well in terms of grip but the worst car I ever had for body roll .... Overall build was good but I had water temp sensor problems followed by the fans packing up which meant it had left me at the side of the road three times in as many months. Not impressed at the time but in reality that was all that went wrong in 3 years.

thanks for the comments, can any of you guys suggest an alternative or is this the one to go for - I'm expecting to pay between £4-5k for a 2000/2001 plate car (avoiding the tax hike) with around 60k miles.

I had a V6 4mo a couple of years ago – a very nice car with a lovely engine note and strong performance. Watch out for coil packs failing and MAF sensors, though – both are relatively common.

The standard suspension set-up is very “comfort-oriented” (which is to say it rolls like a dinghy in a swell), but many were specified with sport suspension which is apparently much better – I believe the 17” alloys are usually a sign of the sport pack having been fitted (as opposed to the standard 16”s).

Forgot to mention coilpacks also went on mine which was covered by vw warranty. (common problem across VAG for a few engines)

if you're imterested PM me, wifes is about to go up for sale - its on an X 2000, 64k miles , dark blue, and i get an indicated 33mpg on the ( mostly duel carriage way) to work..

I can echo many of the above comments. Ours was a decent all rounder with a nice smooth engine, good traction and decent equipment. Its not a sports car and had fairly underwhelming handling. Mrs Phlap used to get 28mpg-ish on her commute.

Ours was fine until about 60K miles, then got more annoying faults than I expected on a VW eg 2 MAF sensors, lots of plugs, water temp gauge, CD changer, window notor amongst others. Nothing major but there always seemed to be something not working.

They are very good value at the moment IMHO, like most big engined stuff.
