Not a 335d remap thread!

I have placed a few threads already this month but I have thought of getting a cheap motor to the 500 mile weekly commute (all motorway/fast A road). I have seen a handful of 325tds (E36) for sale at for around 1500 (US computer so 'Pound Sterling' key not functioning!) with 120 - 150K on the clock. As the car will purely be for the motorway commute is is a sensible buy? Will be for the wife so I need a dependable and safe car. Does not need to be anything special as we have a newer car also. MPG figures suggest 45 mpg - is this realsitic for an old 12V idi engine? I like the idea of a meaty sounding straight 6 over a similar priced diesel Rover 200! Any advice from those who have owned would be great. Also, can they be chipped and to what figure? Not that importnant, just the PH coming out in me!!
