m3 smg gear cover dome on 325ci sport

Hi all i have a bmw 325ci sport 2001 and i have just bought a smg gear knob which is gorgeous.And i have just bought the plastic surround with chrome dome.The problem is my car is a manual and when i fitted surround and tried to change gear it would nt as the chrome dome surround stopped it question is is there away of getting around this with the gear stick or is it a wast of time.And should i put old surround and gaiter back on.Thanks
