Then you might want to watch out if you park on the street. I've noticed quite a few E46s, either M3 or normal E46 with M sport kit, parked on the street are missing the front bumpers after some thief has stolen them overnight (presumably, unless having no front bumper is a fashion statement). I took a photo of this M3 below, as an example.

Unfortunate, and only possible thanks to how easy it is to remove a bumper from a 3 series.

This used the be a problem with big bumper Mk2 Golf Gtis and Jetta.

I remember coming down one morning to fund some scum had decided to help themselves to the front and rear bumpers off my Jetta 1.6TX which had big bumpers as std.

They hit several cars in the same area on the same night. fkers. I was without the car for weeks as they were very rare on the Jetta and had to come from Germany. The same bolts removed also held the engine in so it couldn't even be driven. frown

Bloody Hell not only me then!

I had the front bumper off my 530 sport stolen at the weekend in north London, the little fkers cut through all the parking sensor and fog lamp wires as well, I expect the bill to be around £3k once its all replaced.

Im now worried about leaving it at night and thinking up ways to make the bumper a lot harder to get off.

There are a worrying number of front bumpers for sale on ebay - including a blue 530 sport bumper in North London..............coincidence????

Happens all the time on the old E36s too.

There is a gap in the market for someone to manufacture something to secure bumpers.

there was a spate of this about a year ago, as nights get longer it makes it easier for these scum to lurk in the shadows. I was told then that the bolts that hold bumpers on should be replaced with security screws or riveted in a few places, anything to put them off. I think the ebayers where reported back then, and got investigated as to how they came by so many ready painted bumpers. Seriously, if you see something on ebay that looks knocked off just report it.

Unfortunately I reckon someone that wants to replace their bumper without paying the insurance excess may well just pay £100 or whatever for a bumper off Ebay without questioning where it came from.

Happened to my 328i Sport on Tuesday night for the third time. The plastic ///M door trim just pops right off, it's like peeling £100 pound notes such as the value they command on ebay.

This has happened a few days before I'm meant to p/x it for a 944 S2 which I've already pushed the boat out for, this could jeapordise the deal as I can't afford to replace them too!

Before they nicked my o/s Sport sill trim which is an even bigger pain. £80 pound to replace one from a breaker then a further £120 to paint the same colour as the car. Once again they just pop off with no special tools and do not cause any damage to the car underneath. Still driving around with it in a slightly different shade of green!

This is all happening in Edinburgh city by the way, and I've seen a few BMWs driving around having fallen afoul to these c***s!

Hang on a sec there. The bolts that hold your bumper on were also used to hold the engine in? WTF?

I live in inner city Edinburgh and I'm beginning to feel my car's been 'tagged' i.e. they know where they can get such items as soon as I fork out to replace them.

To combat this I've came up with a switch activated alarm that will emit 140 decibels as soon as someone begins to yank them off. Nice little device that's external to the car circuit and would give the theives a fright.

I'd try market the device as it's a clear problem but it's a little too specific to the E36.

It's worth noting that some cars are at that stage now where people can afford to buy but not fully maintain. Or, they can be a lesser model and then modify it.

Sadly the E46 is at that stage now. I have seen some real shockers with bit of random plastic hanging off them in a way that no stuggart factory intended. This will only get worse too. I guess that means security and looking at how the key parts are attached to the car. My car has sadly been randomly picked on and now had enough so it's going.
