My 3.0si Z4 said last night it needed an extra litre of oil, but even though I've looked through the manual I can't see what grade I ought to be putting in. Castrol says 0W-30 - anyone know if this is the right grade, or should I just give the main dealer who I bought the car from a ring?

Ta!

If you're topping up, it's best to go with whatever oil has been put in there since the last service.

BMW now recommends using Mobil 1 5W-30 (previous recommendation was Castrol Edge 0W-30). Sytner in Leicester have confirmed this and they now use Mobil 1 when they change the oil at service time and if they give a litre of top up oil at time of service.

Mobil 1 is a superior oil so the changeover is a good thing. Hope this clears things up.

In what respect? I currently always use Castrol Edge 0w30 in my 530. I'm due an oil service in a few thousand miles - what is superior about Mobil 1? I've noticed its cheaper but as my local dealer, and the cars supplying dealer from new, both used SLX Longtec II 0w30 (Of which Edge is the consumer version) I've stuck with it.

Mobil 1 is a truly fully synthetic oil. I'm not an expert on oil, but believe there subtle differences between oil and the 5w-30 Mobil 1 is regarded pretty highly. Someone who knows more than me may be able to confirm / deny this? Although, the Castrol edge isn't bad either.

Sytner confirmed the recommended oil has changed for my z4, not sure if this will also apply to the 3.0 litre in the 530.
