before i go out into the big world of buying my very first tvr. the question i ask is just how reliable are they?? when i buy my 4.5 cerb' will it spend more time in the garage getting repaired than me driving it? reading some of the stuff posted here it doesn't fill me with great confidence! can someone give me an honest answer to this.
cheers gav.

This really is one masive question with out a real answer, you might go out to a dealer, and this is not just aimed at TVR and spend £50k on a new one and have nothing but trouble, then again you might pick one up by chance at auction for £10k with no history and run it for 2 years spending nothing on it other than Mobil 1 and Optimax
No 2 cars are the same, just because car x has had problems doesn't mean car y will, the latter you can buy the better and theres a few points on the 'buying tips' thread to look out for but at the end of the day these are £50k sports cars and no mater how cheap the cars get the service and running bills stay the same
Normal running costs based on a 6k annual mileage seem to be about £2k + insurance and petrol, some years it's higher, some years it's lower, go into it withyour eyes open, and one thing to remember is people who have had problem cars tend to shout louder than people with 'good uns'

allow 3K pa running costs.
Expect to break down once a year.
Expect to need to see the garage 3 or 4 times a year.
Expect to spend money on upgrades.

i appreciate your reply. i suppose at the end of the day it's worth it. it's a hell of a car for the money and you only live once you can't take your money with you.

When it does break down(which it will) it usually happens at the most hectic set of traffic lights it can find!
I`d only consider buying a cerbera if you can afford to shell out 2-4 grand a year without it affecting any other aspect of the life your enjoying. So far I`ve had to "postpone the holiday" that the girlfriend was looking forward to,just to fix the thing a couple of time.

But just driving it is as good as a holiday. 2 days tearing up the countryside in it sure beats a week on the beach.

Try telling her that!
At this point in time i dont have enough confidence in the car to take me as far as the country side!

Haven't got a cerbera(yet) but am currently running a Tuscan which i bought in p/ex after my first foray into Tiv ownership in a Chim 500.
Prior to this various M beemers and further back VW GTI's.

Must admit the first time I got into my chim to find the carpet's soaked from a earlier downpour, i was somewhat 'miffed'and the Tuscan has been far from problem free...

BUT,

I am looking to buy another TVR, i hope that i will not have to go through a lot of the agro that i had with the other's, but even if i do i am certain that i will spend the time, effort and cash needed to get it sorted and end up buying another.

Seem irrational?

Perhaps, but buy one and you will feel exactly the same way, you may have no problems whatsoever and you will love the car, you may have some problems but you will still love the car.

I am far from being a enthusiast in the traditional sense of the word but these cars are beguiling (sp?).
Remember the girlfriend that i am sure is a generic part of the life history of most(if not all of us)she was wrong in so many way's but so right in other's.....TVR.

(apologies to Harry ALA "a HT lead is like a beautiful woman....")
