Just posted some of the below on another thread, different topic but got me thinking though about the E60 M5 rarity value...

Used E60 M5's available in the country - 34

Used B7 RS4's available in the country - 100

And the E60 M5 has been out longer...

Rarity value????

No idea if this means there are more M5 owners not willing to sell or whatever?!!

But never realised myself the number would be as low as this for M5's compared to the RS4 which they stopped making a short while ago....

Anyone any ideas of numbers in the UK for the B7 RS4 and E60 M5?

The RS4 is more of an M3 competitor isn't it? Therefore you'd expect there to be more sold.

It is, the difference in numbers just surprised me as I'd had a RS4 a while ago...and never had the M5 as being so low on the used market....

Excuse my ignorance, but whats the relevance of 'B7'? Is that like E60 in BMW language? If so, how do the B numbers work?

It is indeed, the B7 is the latest RS4..

I don't claim to know all of them though!

Not sure about the RS4

But a search on BMW website shows 11 AUC cars and Pistonheads classified with 14
so thhe rest probably autotrader.

B7 RS4's are the V8s

B5s are the 2.7 Bi-Turbos...

I dont really know any more than that either !!

BMW use 'E' and now 'F' coz they've run out of Es. The new 7-Series has the designation F-01

Audi use 'B'

Merc use 'W' as far as I know

Oh ok, so it's just availability test at this precise moment in time?

I have to say I love my E60 M5 and think it's a special car but I would ALSO get the RS4 if I could afford it...

Wouldn't bother, had the RS4 (great car) but once you've had the M5, you'll not look back, specially on dry days!!

I only tested the RS4 for about an hour and I have to say, that manual box had such a familiar feel to it... the all wheel drive was great for "from stnading" starts. To me, it was a very different car than the M5. Although I chose the M5 as an overall better car, the RS4 brings something else to the table and I would love to have one as a second car. Would certainly choose the rs4 over the m3 at least.
