M3 / 335I Sport or Alpina B3 Open Top??

Just looking for any opinions on the difference between these cars.
I have owned a 330I Sport Conv in the past and loved it. I am looking at a 3 series conv and have these in mind.
Currently have had everything between a TVR/NSX/P1/S-type-R/525d/S2000...the list goes on.
I'm looking for a jack of all trades, cruiser one day, track the next, GT the next.
What's the M3 auto box like? Switchtronic ? Lower cost of 335I? Should I look at a coupe? It has to be able to seat my 6 year old kids.
What do you think?
I ask this, as I went to BMW to look at an M3 and he has said that I should also consider the Alpina. I am thinking the Alpina will be softer than the M3 and therefore I should save some money and look at the 335I.
