When I generate the output files (as AVI/WMV or RM), the title page is quite blurred despite fiddling with all settings to request max quality. The rest of the film is of sufficient quality but text is crap.

Given that the title page is plain text I thought it would have no problem compressing that whilst retaining quality.

Is there a means of achieving decent quality?

I'll have a look and get back to you soon....

One question, why Real Player and not .wmv?

I believe Dan produced the Culdrose video in Studio 7, saving the clip as an MPEG. To be blunt - not only was the quality crap, but the files were quite big.

He then tried using Windows Movies maker to re-code the video into WMV and the results are much more acceptable. To do this, save from Studio 7 as an uncompressed AVI file, import into Windows Movie Maker and resave in WMV format.

edited to clear up my English-ish

One con for *.wmv is, that it won't work with all desktop environments.

Does anyone have difficulties with *.mpeg?

I found that Studio handles .wmv a little better....will do a test and post both versions up for comparison.

Will use Top Gear clip of the Stig's summary from the last series.

Here are 2 videos of the same clip, one in .wmv, the other in .rm

www.sleepy-fish.com/fish/Stig_memory.wmv (3,464 Kb)
www.sleepy-fish.com/fish/Stig_memory.rm (4,351 Kb)

The audio in the realmedia has gone out of sync, and is a bigger file. Thoughts on the quality difference apart from the syncing?

LB

Please note, these files will probably move in the next couple of days as I re-organise the directories, but should then stay put.

Ok, turned out that it was because my input video was of poor quality and it just went downhill from there.

LINUX user

(Actually do you have problems with specific MPEG codecs or is that a general enquiry?)

It's a general enquiry, because I've never had probs with mpegs
