Won't go into the specifics, but XP thinks a window is on another screen - which doesn't exist. So I can't get to the window.

I can right click maximise on the application on the tool bar and that brings the window into full screen on the existing screen, but if i go to the independent floating window mode, it goes back to this non existent screen.

Erm, help? How do I reset screen positions for apps in XP?

instead of picking maximize from that menu select move. Then hold down the appropriate cursor key to move the window towards your active display (ie if it's appearing on a screen which it thinks is to the right of your active screen hold down the left cursor key). When the window appears you can use the mouse to drag it as normal

A single press of the cursor key will then attach it to the mouse cursor - you don't have to wait until it appears on the screen.

even if the window is not on the screen, as long as it has the focus (is active) you can use ALT-space "m" then a cursor direction to attach it to your mouse cursor.

if you don't have the screen attached, right click the desktop and goto properties, you may need to use the above trick to bring the properties screen to your actual display, then click identify, this will show a 1/2 on your screen, whichever number is not displayed select that monitor then uncheck "extend my display onto this device", if its grayed out select your monitor (the one with the number shown in identify), then select "use this as my default monitor", then follow the previous instruction on the other monitor!

be careful not to disable the monitor that works!!

MAKE A NOTE OF THIS BEFORE DOING ANYTHING:
if it all goes tits up, reboot then just before you would normally see the "windows xp" logo, repeatedly tap F8 and select "boot into safe mode" - this will allow you to reset the display settings, handy if you disable your monitor or set the resolution too high!

It was a little more complicated as it was an XP vm running on a Mac. The Mac has two screens and one must have been disconnected at some point whilst running the vm, which meant XP wasn't seeing the second screen but was more than happy to draw the window in the non existent screen.

As a guess.
