Sure for someone like me who's computer skills run out just after burning photos to a cd this is of little or no use, but for the nefarious activities of those skilled in the witchcraft of t'inerweb I imagine that it's little short of giving them the name, location and keys to the bank leaving only the alarm to bypass...

I for one am outraged that information I have chosen to publish on the Internet for all to see is available for all to see on the Internet. I would like to thank the "security expert" involved for bringing this terrible issue to my attention.
It's true though. All this "security expert" has done is iterate through some user ids and slurped any data that was public. He didn't compromise Facebook security in any way.

Keep everything in your profile private and there's no issue.
I think that this is the problem. You have to actively ensure that all your information is private. This place for example requires you to chose if you want to add certain information and you have control over what you chose to post. I'm sure that if someone wanted to find out all about me there is enough information over the X,000 posts i have made or that friends have included in their posts about shared experiences, etc. But the point is this is information that have actively been published and in a very scattered fashion.
With FB it's all there for the taking unless you actively chose not to make it so. Given that not everyone is aware of, or has made incorrect assumptions about, how much information they need to actively 'protect' there will be a lot of people who will have added information they had no idea was available to all. Again, looking at this place, only the other day i saw a post from someone who was all surprised that another poster had used their Christian name and referred to their occupation in a response. Information that they had clearly stated in their profile!

The issue with Facebook is that it has a valuation in the tens of billions but barely makes any money.
Someday it needs to support it's valuation with some real financial performance and the issue is how can it do that. There are only really three routes, advertising, subscription or using the data they hold for commercial purposes. In practice the last one is probably their only real hope.
So they want to share information with other sites, have FB ask the means by which you identify yourself on the internet, pick up your browsing and purchase habits and use them to drive content to you and to your friends. It's all good stuff but not what people signed up to FB for so how well they will take it when their friends start learning about the things they've bought on line is anyone's guess.
