I have a Vodafone USB 3g stick for use when travelling around....very easy and pretty good, costs £10 per month. About to take delivery of a wifi only iPad. Is there a way to take out the sim card from the 3G stick and put it in a device that will broadcast the signal as a wifi signal that the iPad can pick up on, therefore giving it internet access through via the 3G stick?

I imagine the technology exists, but wouldn't know what to search for on the web, or which might be the good ones etc.

Any thoughts?

Ta :-)

I've been looking for just the same thing.

Vodafone will soon be releasing just the thing you are looking for .... a 3G Mobile Broadband Wi-Fi Hot Spot in which you put the SIM.

It is something like this .... http://www.3g.co.uk/PR/Sept2009/Vodafone-3G-Mobile...

.... although it might not look quite the same. I think it is currently listed as "coming soon" in the Vodafone brochure, found in Vodafone stores.

Just found it on the Vodafone Ireland site ...

Not sure of UK release date but phone customer services and they can probably tell you.

Cool. I'd love the vodafone one but really don't want to buy another contract...as I've already got one with the 3G stick. Will look at the links on here.

Thanks :-)

Have a look for a 3 Mifi device. Pay As You Go, and £50 for the kit, job done.

You may not have to, depending upon how long you've have the existing USB stick. I'm pretty sure you can upgrade just the same as a handset ...

You should be able to share the internet connection of the 3g modem via your current computer's (the host) WiFi, by creating an ad-hoc wireless network and using Windows ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) - no extra stuff required.

See here - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networkin...

I can't vouch for this working for all devices though (such as your ipad), but I do know it works with additional computers...

What I want though is a small battery powered pocket device that I can insert my 3G sim card into and hey presto it becomes a wireless router....for when out and about and there is no other wifi signal to use. In the house, I use the home wifi signal from the broadband connection.

The Vodafone thing looks perfect, but I only want the unit, not a contract that goes with it as I already have the contract.

You could try this router, Zoom 3G Wireless-N Travel Router, it's battery powered and gets good reviews on Amazon.
