Lost 1.5mb of Broadband speed
Discussion
I've been with BT Broadband almost since day 1 (it would have been day 1, had they not lost the database of original people who registered for it).
Anyway, in all that time I've never had any issues with my connection.
Until now.
I'm about 4+ miles from my local exchange, and although I pay for BT BB Option 3 (20mb)) - the best I've ever got was a 3.9mb connection.
I occasionally test my speeds - but today my speed is down to 2.2mb
I swapped out my BT router for a Netgear one - and that gave me the same speeds. Plugged it into the master socket - and still got the same.
Does anyone have any idea or suggestions why I'd lose 1.5mb of BB speed.

There are countless reasons. All of them your fault until you've spent at least an hour talking to India and then ultimately it gets resolved.
I lose speed from 6,000Kbps down to 2,000kbps (or lower) about 3 times a year. Each time I have to deal with India and each time it's ultimately a glitch with BT.
Plugging into the master socket will make no difference, if you have an NTE5 you need to remove the lower front plate and plug into the test socket. That way your internal wiring is isolated and you are plugging into BT's wiring & nothing more, if the speed is still low then India here you come
I live less than a mile from the exchange, and once a month my speed drops from 4.5 to 1.5
I then phone Raj or Sanjay at BT to complain, they say it's not their fault and must be my router
Later that evening it has restored itself to fullspeed
I reckon BT are throttling back some customers, and those that don't notice or complain will be left at their new slower speed
or, call me cynical !

I'm with Be.
Tried Ntl/Virgin for 3 years and before that BT.
BT were as described by previous posters.
Switched to Be 2 years ago and they are faultless.
3.5 miles from exchange,constant 4.5 - 5.0. If it ever (twice a year)
drops at all I'm notified first and it's very brief.
Oh and &12 a month.

I had this problem with BT, did the usual calling to BT and eventually they sent an engineer round last week. He explained that they have this new gadget which detects whether it's a problem with your line or at the exchange. It turns out it was at the exchange and it identified what he needed to do,he popped down there( it's only 800m away ) and BOOM! We're back to full speed.. According to him, without this new 'toy', it would have taken an age to fix it. Was he talking st? Maybe, but i don't care as it's back to top speed now!

Same story here about 3 weeks ago. Some new gadget showed that my line had dropped out overnight ('parrently) and had not come back to full speed. It took a lot of arguing with a snotty Indian to persuade BT that, for the umpteenth time, my router was actually fine and could they possibly have a look.
We used to be with Bangalore Telecom, and for years we had no issues. Then slowly, speed dropped from 4MB down to dialup speeds. Numerous calls to engineers, who eventually told me that their equipment was fine and it was the stuff in the house.
So I replaced everything, from cables to router, even used a different network card in the PC – simply to prove a point.
They eventually opened a case file, and 48 hours later advised me there was a fault on the exchange. Another 48 hours and they “fixed it”... and we then had broadband speeds... all 1.5MB of it.
As we were out of contract, we moved to BE (thankfully exchange is LLU’d) and we’ve enjoyed excellent service and 6MB since.

The thing that irks me is that they provide a service for an engineer to come out and check your service for £85. And if they can't increase the speed by .5mb then they refund your money.
I'm happy to pay the money - but loathe to do so if they have throttled my line, and will simply 'unthrottle' it - voila - that will be £85 please.

If your exchange is LLU'd - move.
