I'm looking for a road bike to complement my Hybrid. I currently have a Giant CRS which i love, but i want something lighter and designed for road use only.

I plan to just cycle for training - not commuting. Max distance will be about 35 miles. The local shop has recommended the Giant Defy 4.

I have about £500 to spend but this is flexible for the right bike.

Any other suggestions?

I think the final lot of 2010 Team Carbon Boardman bikes are going for £999 at Halfords,

I haven't got the need for one and haven't experienced one. But if I had the opportunity to buy one on the cyclescheme this would be it, all reviews say this is the best road bike available within the lower £1,000 limit on the C2W scheme. I'd double my budget and get this.

They're fine - a friend has the womens model which was part of a bundle deal with some triathlon kit. Pretty standard entry-level road bike. Specialized Allez is worth a look at the same price.

Bear in mind though you can get discounted 2010 models for less now:

.. as cyclescheme is always at full RRP, consider if it's actually worth going that route.

I have a 2010 Team Carbon. People who ride it are amazed it only costs £1k.

My company don't have a C2W scheme so I researched a lot before spending my cash. Its a bike that I just love to ride. Its very light, very stiff and has excellent components.

If you are a 40% tax payer, on C2W you will get the TC for around £500. A true 'no brainer'.

Halfords have their own cyclescheme, the 'other' cyclescheme cannot be used there.. Also remember there is now an approximate 25percent of bike price transfer fee at the end, so TC is 750, not 500...

25% is the maximum amount you will pay, there are plenty of opportunities being proposed in all the main schemes to reduce that significantly to make it more in line with what used to be the £500 cost price.

Thanks for the replies.

I really like the look of the current Giant Defy range. I can definatly afford the Defy 4, perhaps the 3.5 and possibly the 3.

Reviews on the web look good too.

Can't comment on the Defy but I ride a 2008 Giant Bowery and have been really impressed with the quality of the bike, and the comfort. I'd seriously consider another Giant if / when I was in the market for a new bike based on my experiences with the Bowery.
