Apologies if this is a repost, but should the actions of these squatters be treated as a crime and not a civil matter?

Do they own the properties or are they renting them from someone else (the displaced tennants)?

Obviously there is more to this than the Daily Mail is letting on. This sounds like squatters moving into a person's second property rather than a person going to work in the morning and coming home in the evening to changed locks.

I still don't see why they just don't pay somebody to beat the st out of them evenever they come out of the house and prevent each one from entering again...

Sounds like the old boy was only gone a couple of days. I can't for the life of me see how the Police regard this as a "Civil" matter - it's fking theft!

I think US homeowners have more rights to protect their home than we do. Also, I can't see the police over there taking the same stance they do over here.

Yeah, a lot more to these stories than the Mail will really say - hell, its all about the Immigrants!

Nah, what the deal is that dodgy letting agents are finding properties that are rife for squatting in and then "leasing" or "renting" them without the owners being aware. They do the full contract and deposit thing and even change the locks when no one is looking and hey presto, poor unsuspecting family is duped and the house owner is stuck with a slightly sticky legal situation. Legally, sitting tenants have the rights and its a civil matter and hence the Police cannot really get involved. So its all a bit of a nightmare situation for all involved, except the fraudsters in the first place, who disappear.

Seems to be happening with second homes as well as holiday lets too. Nasty business if you ask me.

Indeed.

Personally I'd love to see a "raid" carried out on these squatters.

All you need is some big blokes, some smoke bombs and a friendly glazier/locksmith.

Pop smoke grenades upstairs and down, wait for miscreants to exit, storm in, secure property, replace locks and windows.

I assume that in the US this kind of behaviour would not be tolerated and that the Police would quite rightly forcibly evict the undesirables who are squatting.

As far as I am concerned this country will continue on its downward slope until we stop pandering to criminals and just for once look after the interests of decent law abiding citizens.

The guy says they've levered the back door off, surely if there's evidence of a break-in it counts as illegal entry/ trespassing?

It is ridiculous and rather worrying how apathetic the police seem to be about it. Make some fking effort to help at least, before palming it off as a 'civil matter'. I bet they love those 2 words.

If it was simply the case of a letting agent "double-booking" a property, for example, you move in somewhere and then a week later a couple arrive on your door-step and claim that they already live there, you'd be on the phone to your agnecy to get them to sort it out. You wouldn't threaten the couple with a knife/threats of violence and tell them to go to court! The "poor unsuspecting family being duped" is clearly bks. They obviously know the situation as to why they come to be living in someone elses property and now that the ass of the law is on their side.

That is sick. I wouldn't be as calm as the residents seem to be. I'd be demanding actions from the police, if this is all true.

Spot on.

A home owner removed from their home by a thief. Why do we put up with this st? Why haven't others in the street helped?

Everything about the story is sad....

Unfortunately I think it will take a change in the law to stop this.
It's ironic that a country that has a relaxed attitude to certain laws has come up with a better solution..

I guess that in these circumstances the people in the street would be afraid of the consequences should they act - both from the Police and the Lithuanians. If I was in the same situation I would find it very difficult not to act forcibly, I would however be 99% confident that should the Police even bother to turn up I would be the one arrested and charged and the illegal squatters would face no charges.
