Go to have a game on Halo: Reach and I get RROD.

The console is 3.5 years old now, and already had 1 repair about 2.5 years ago - reckon I'll get a repair for free?

If I have to pay, I think I'd rather buy a new 250GB one.

Anyone else been in a similar situation?

the red ring of death on xboxes is really common. No idea what it takes to repair one, but i cant imagine it costs that much

i thought that it was a overheating issue, you can pull the console apart clean up the heatsinks, apply a better thermal paste and fit some better clamps. You can buy everything off ebay

They won't repair it if its over three years old - the previous repair doesn't reset this period. Repair from MS is 70-odd quid IIRC and you get a years warranty on that. When it happened to me I just bought a new one, wasn't that much more and at least I get the full three years back!

Did they repair or replace last time??

Most RROD's they send out a replacement console and reset the warranty, register a repair on Xbox.com you may be supprised.

Repair I guess, I tried setting up a repair - and they say it's out of warranty - they want about £70.

For £130 more I get a new one, which shouldn't break!

Has more HDD and if it does break goes to MS for a free repair.

Id do both and keep the old one as an Emergency reserve/loaner.

If yours is that old it probably won't have HDMI output either – this makes a surprisingly huge improvement to image quality over component. Worth getting a new one for that, I'd say (I did this 2 years back when my one died… repaired the old one under warranty and sold it on.)

type your serial number into MS support, that will tell you exactly what your warranty status is and what your options are

I've just had mine go as well (1 week after my PS3 decided to stop reading discs mad). I'm going to try the repair kits you can on ebay first. If that doesn't work i'm going to go for a new slim. Bloody crappy made consoles!!

Let me know how you get on.

A friend has a barely used Xbox arcade (pre-HDMI) so imagine that will be fine, tempted to offer him a bit of cash for it. Any idea on market value? eBay seems to be all over the place.

eBay is a funny thing for 360's many people wouldn't touch an ebay one with a 10ft clown pole because of the chance of getting one that has RRoD, dodgy repair or has been banned from Live and for some reason this tends to mean the auction are all over the shop price wise.

To update this, fitted a new clamp kit (i.e. heatsink bolts) and works perfectly again - for now anyway.

Do you have a link to where you purchased the kit?

I got RROD on sunday, it happened 5 times in a row, then on the 6th reboot it worked fine and has been fine since. Did this happen to yours before it died completely?

I did the clamp mod, was OK for another 2 months, then went pop again. I went and bought an elite to replace it.

Broken again. Bugger.

It seems a waste to have to buy a new 250gb unit, that is exactly the same as what I have now.

Tempted to try and argue the SoGA route - but having buggered about with it, that's probably not an option!

Is the current 250gb going to be it for a while, or are we expecting the next gen Xbox soon?

Well, new Xbox S 250GB + HDMI cable + Fallout New Vegas + Hard Drive transfer kit on their way from Amazon. £225ish posted, not too bad.

Couldn't see the point going for Kinect.
