Some mobile provider help please (HTC DESIRE HD)

So I get a call today from Carphone Warehouse offering me a Desire HD for £35 a month. Delivery expected 7 days.

So I jump on line and find Phones 4 U offering similar deal.

Both shops offering the phone on either Vodaphone and Orange.

BUT I cant buy directly from Orange....why?

PS Really want it on 02 but can port number to Orange so not a deal breaker

Because the retailers are using a network subsidy to subsidise the phone.

If Orange don't carry the handset, that is their choice.

Whats the advantage to be gained by buying direct from the cell company? am I being thick here?
