Plane craziness on Radio 4 this morning.
Discussion
They were discussing airport security this morning, after the head of BA was commenting that the current checks were over the top, and not needed, but basically we were just bowing down the the Americans again. LINK
Honestly I could not believe that someone (a Lord) used the Simpsons tiger/rock defence. Mind blown..
I might email the guy saying I have a rock, and I have not been attacked by Terrorists, do they want to buy it?
All the Terrorists need to do to inflict maximum terror, is just even attempt about 20 silly ways of getting bombs etc onto planes.. in pants, inside babies clothes, in a hat rim, woven into clothes etc.. Then all babies, pants and hats and clothes would be banned or subject to more searches.
I think they have won..

Could I carry the rock through in my hand luggage?
it would need to be scanned. Since liquid rock is essentially lava, that'd be tricky.
I think some security checks needs to be relaxed. London City airport's a fking nightmare in the evenings now.
They are not even consistent in their implementation of these checks between different terminals at the same airport. I've even sen at T5 some lines being made to remove shoes and others not.
T5 drives me mad. It should be so quick to get through with no check-in, bur they delight in slowing you down at security, particularly in the "Fast Track" lanes it seems (where they love to get a queue of businessmen waiting to have their bags manually searched), with the result that, even when you arrive well over an hour before your flight, you have no time to go to the Lounge. It must be eating into the revenues of the retailers.

As Pothole has said, the 'terrorists' have won. You can't drive up to the airport, you have to be held up for hours at screening it is a bloody nightmare. As someone who flies on a regular basis, it is nothing short of a massive inconvinience and makes a pain in the arse journey even more miserable.
If we must have this sort of security, we could do well to take a leaf out of the Israeli book. They aim to get you through check in, security, immigration and into the departure lounge bar within thirty minutes.
A great example is Heathrow T5 or Manchester T2. When it is busy, the throngs queuing to get through screening is huge, hundreds of people packed into a small space getting frustrated, hot and annoyed. It is also a perfect place to set off a nice little bomb that would cause chaos and panic throughout the airline industry. These sorts of bottle necks are not permitted at Ben Gurion Airport or anywhere else. A simple and efficient security system would eliminate this.
We need to profile and pick people that fit that profile. Not letting a seventy year old OAP take his bottle of brandy through security because 'it is a security risk', or having to carry all your liquids in a plastic bag, which if you don't have you must be a threat to airline security is ridiculous.
Obviously all of this would require a modicum of common sense, which neither the UK and especially the US lack.

prticularly when you can stock up on glass bottles, nail scissors, razor blades and all manner of other potential weapons in Duty Free (assuming you arrive hours early in order to have time to shop). If we must have this sort of security, we could do well to take a leaf out of the Israeli book. Thing is, it's not EU wide at all. In Malta I could turn up 30 minutes before my flight time (having checked in online and only carrying hand luggage) go through security in minutes (they do ask you to remove laptops from bags but not much else, never been asked to remove shoes e.g.) and have a quick nose in the shops before catching the flight...best thing about it was that I could leave my flat about 20 minutes before that and be in the pub less than half an hour after landing on the return leg.
