I have a position that is (I'm pretty sure) safe. But the prospects for salary and post progression are limited to say the least. We've had a freeze for the last two years and I can't see anything significant coming my way in the next review either.

My current location works for me both professionally and personally as my better half works about 20mins away and our nursery is inbetween. 20 mins commute for the whole family.

I've been approached for a position that is both more senior and better paid and has been advertised as 'flexible working environment' and the guy who approached me indicated that the fact that their office is some 90mins by car / 2hrs by train is not something that would be an issue; I could stay where I am.

I've suggested that I'll have a 'chat' with them, but the devil on my shoulder is saying one thing, and the little guy with wings on the other is saying something else.

Am I mad to be considering a change in position in times like these when I have security (but limited prospects) where I am?

Short answer: No.
Long answer: No. What do you have to lose by considering it? What do you (potentially) have to gain by considering it? A conversation is all that's needed at this point, and if you don't, you'll never know...

I know, I know. It's just that you get used to being somewhere.

I lose nothing by considering it. No-one likes change when there is nothing tangible forcing you to do something different.

I gain that step up the ladder, a variation in experiences that can only be good for my career, the extra pennies would always be appreciated.

Fair enough, that conclusion was where I'd got to aswell. Fear of the unknown I suppose, and fear of failure. Would only be my second 'real' job afterall. But I was hoping for progression in-house, and that's not happening as Id like.
