Sony Bravia KDL40EX713
Discussion
It's a Sony - there's 10-20% of the price just for the branding - and it's LCD - reasonable at best, for the brand name.
When you say "a good price", what exact amount is that?
Moreover, what are you partnering with it - games console, Sky/Virgin, HD or SD, BR player?
If the last one mentioned, in order to see the benefit of 1080p movies, you'd need to be sitting about 4.5-5 ft from it, will you?
In other words, if you're not going to be using BR or sitting close enough to benefit, then a new Panasonic 42X20 would be a better proposition, or a 50S20 if you are into your movies (still talking about 7-8ft viewing distance for 1080p, which might be doable if you move the sofa forward on those occasions).

Not bad considering it's £899 (less the VAT offer being run), plus 5 yr warranty from John Lewis, but for not much more, I'd say the Panasonic 42G20 would show it a clean pair of heels across the board, and with the FreeSat and Freeview HD tuners built-in, plus THX mode for watching your films without the expense of going down the ISF calibration route, you'd be as happy as a transvestite in a frock and wig.
