4 bed detached house and we've got a dummy fireplace in the lounge with an electric fire for effect in it. Flickering coal thingy that looks pretty good, but I'm thinking of going one stage further.

What with rising fuel prices and also we've just sold a second home in France where we had an open wood burning fire and quite enjoyed it, I quite fancy adding a proper fire to the house.

I realise it'll need a proper chimney and looking at a couple of websites it seems I could get away with just a double wall stainless flue pipe. But from the outside of the house that'd look a bit crap.

So could I just put in the double wall SS pipe and brick round it or is there more to it than that?

Found this so far: http://www.stovesonline.co.uk/wood_burning_stoves/...

Anyone know more? Not planning to burn coal (we don't have too many coal mines in Cambridgeshire), it'd just be locally grown wood

We use these when people don't want a metal pipe coming out the roof of the house, you can't tell the difference.
They can be cladded with the same brick as the house or it can be rendered and painted
Two storey budget on £7'000-8'500 for everything. Including some kind of stove, hearth, etc.
