I've been tiling my hearth, and I went out to get some floor tile adhesive yesterday.

There was a 2.5kg bag for £8.16, and next to it, a 5kg bag for £8.19.

Well, duh - I'll go for the 5kg bag - I probably won't use half of it, but it's nice to have some spare in case something goes wrong.

So I tile the floor yesterday evening, and this evening I went and got some grout (I'm also tiling the fire place, and I didn't know how many tiles I needed yesterday - so I got those today too).

I did the wall tiling, and had enough time to do the grouting. I get the vacuum out to clean the gaps, and one of the tiles came off. Oh damn - I'll have to re-stick that down. So I try the vacuum on a few more. The entire back row comes off, but the front two rows are stuck down. Never mind - it looks like it hadn't set completely (the tiling lines looked good though). It did say I could grout in 24 hours time, but maybe it takes a bit longer to fully cure.

So I scrape off the adhesive, mix some more, and re-lay them.

Job done - they're now re-laid. I then go back to the bag of adhesive. I've used about 90% of it - just as well I bought the 5kg bag. Hold on - it says "...up to 6.5m2". I've only done about 1.5m2 if that. Argh - it actually says "Grouts up to 6.5m2". The 2.5kg bag (which was the same colour) was for adhesive, and the 5kg bag was grout. That's why there was such a small price difference for twice the amount - and I'd read the instructions off the smaller bag.

So - the question is: Do I need to re-re-lay them? Or will grout actually hold?

(The wall tiles are held with wall tile adhesive - I made sure of that!)

Grouting inbetween them might lock them together enough to stay in place, but I would get them up asap and remove the grout from the back before it sets hard.

Thanks for the advice - I was rather afraid that I'd need to re-do them.

Unfortunately, the tiles aren't easily replaceable (they were left here by the previous owner, and they match the kitchen) - so I'll see how they are tonight. I'm a bit worried about the ones that have actually appeared to stick as to whether they'd be easy to remove or not.

I am reminded of the screech my father made a few years ago when laying some sort of floor-leveling compound after covering the whole of the kitchen floor and then reading the instructions which said only to do 1m2 at a time before leveling off, as the stuff was very quick-setting! It took him hours to chip away all the little mountain ranges!
