Hi guys.

Just a little business opportunity I have been thinking of/working on for a few months. Basically I am now in a position to access freshly dredged marine sand, this same sand has been used by Lafarge/Mini Mix & Tarmac for building purposes in the past so is of good quality with very minor coal traces. This same sand has also been bought by other major companies & Local authorities to raise ground levels and cover “nasties”.

I have all the relevant contacts in place to land the sand, as well as having Quay space to land it and the machinery to load onto lorries or even bag into one tonne "dumpy" bags.

Is there a market for such aggregates? Anyone who may be worth contacting? I have access to quality sand at grass route prices but I am not sure how to take this idea forward. Most of the large aggregates companies have access to this sand already and the down turn in the building market has seen them over stock their sand already.

I did make contact with a large local landscaper wishing to use the sand for block paving, the problem was the amounts required were hardly worth landing the sand (3t per week).

Thanks for your comments.

You need to contact the aggregate companies who supply in bulk to the builders merchants, but I don't know who they are, sorry!

I would contact the likes of La Farge and Hanson (not the pop group). I know Hanson purchased a couple of sand and gravel plants to cope with the Olympic demand, around London.

You could also contact local council's that annually host those beach things in town squares, in a similar fashion to what happens in Paris...They must use alot. Alternatively, contact local builders merchant's could be cheaper than their usual supplier.

My best friend is one of Balfour Beatty's top Project Directors - specialises in Highway Construction - might be of interest!?!?!

Thanks for the replies guys. As for Lafarge, they have a local sand depot and actually sell the sand that I also have access too. As for Hanson, they are also a majour player in the area however, they have closed their depot & their dredging vessels have left the area

I have worked my self into a position now though which could see me landing sand at the same price, if not cheaper than these large aggregate companies do, therefore if I had contacts requiring the sand, I could by pass the large companies that add £'s onto the price of the raw materials.

Khushy, thats excellent! I know the sand is of suitable use for covering electric cabling, gas pipes, ground work etc so your contact could be a very useful one indeed. We have supplied Corus in the past and they saved a fortune using our stuff instead of soil!!

Basic I know but main uses are here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sand This might be a good place to get you started with the main users of sand.

Councils would be a good place to start right now:

  1. Railroads: Train operators use sand to improve the traction of wheels on the rails.
  2. Roads: Sand improves traction (and thus traffic safety) in icy or snowy conditions.
