I'm all for philanthropy but I don't think its the governments job to spoon feed us into it.

Don't these ministers have anything more productive to do with their time?

Not content with taxing us to the hilt what money we have left they suggest we should give away?

Are there any politicians who aren't bonkers?

It's called micromanaging, they are either incapable or unwilling to address the real issues so make a big deal out of fking about with nonsense.

You "foster a culture of charitable giving" by lowering taxes.

Quite, I fear the vat hike is going to be the nail in the coffin for many businesses, sucking the lifeblood out of what little remains is a sure fire recipe for killing any growth, people cannot spend what they don't have.

Agreed, if it's important lobby the tossers in westminster to fund it.

Why not make charitable giving tax deductible? Happens in some parts of the world and seems to work quite well

Unbelievable, the people really don't live in the real world, do they?

It's pretty easy for a group of millionaires to suggest donating a few pounds here and there but it's not always that easy for the rest of the population.

Being a government scheme, I'd imagine that there'd be so much blue tape and quango involvement that the charities would no doubt get a pathetic percentage of the donations by the time the government had taken their cut for running the scheme.

I thought that was why we're in this mess (and nothing whatsoever to do with those poor bankers) hehe

Can't you do that to a certain extent in the UK via Gift Aid?

Kinda,
When I lived in Canada, I had an allowance on my tax return for charitable donation. So, as long as I got a receipt, charitable giving came from my gross income rather than net. Consequently I felt a lot more generous......

That sums it up perfectly.

Not just on this issue either, just look at other spending, despite all the shock at the big bad cuts we are still plummeting into debt, just at a slightly slower rate.

It's a great idea... cos, like, the money will definitely go to the right charities and not be blown on re-decorating Downing Street or the Olympic farce or a big MP party...
