I have a client that has asked me to build him an e-commerce site trading in spare parts. I normally supply the hardware for standalone web-servers based at my clients sites or managed racks, but my usual suspect is unable to get involved for the next few months due to current demand. As this was a personal recommendation, it leaves me somewhat in the lurch.

Therefore can anyone recommend me, first-hand, a competent web designer/builder that could build a site which will hold approximately 1000 parts to start with, that is scalable, and allows the customer to add/remove parts without being a DBA? We're not talking enterprise stuff here but something that can grow with him that is not going to cost the earth when it comes to maintenance and tie in. There are a few other sites in direct competition with his so it needs to be something which stands out from the crowd so to speak.

Their previous guy is not available due to work commitments and my client is anxious not to pick someone that will not be available should the need arise. What would be really useful is someone known on here that can provide some references for a longish term. Equally, as much as I love the work my current web-designer does (in the non PH ghey manner), I cannot be left in a situation where I am turning work away. Worth mentioning is the fact that I get asked for a lot of work outside my chosen field of expertise; this is because I *do* try and go the extra mile by doing silly o'clock with clients when they need it. I'm not asking for someone that answers their phone at 4 in the morning (although I have done depending on who is calling!) but I guess I'm looking for a smallish firm that is committed beyond contractual status that also wants to earn a reputation which puts them above the mainstream large ecommerce houses.

Any suggestions?

Lord Flathead (nice nick, by the way),

I will be the first in a pool of "self-recommenders". Recommendations don't really come more first-hand than this. smile

Check out my portfolio through the link in my profile, and if you think it would be worth our while talking, let me know.

Can supply plenty of references too (nothing stopping you e-mailing any/all of the contacts on all the sites on my portfolio for starters!).

Bit of a latecomer but I can personally recommend http://www.webselect.net/ I've worked with them for the past 10 years.
