I've got a unibody MacBook Pro (i5 2.53Ghz 17") that I love.

I'm running 4Gb of RAM, and want to upgrade to 8Gb - have used Crucial in the past, but they are out of stock of the 8Gb kits.

Has anyone got any recommendations for suppliers of memory (am slightly reticent to order from ebay as I've heard that Macs are RAM fussy, and there's often some *rebranded* memory for sale that may not necessarily be as good as the name suggests (if you see what I mean!)

The floor is open, and all help gratefully received.

I've had some good experiences with Kingston so they may be worth a look.

What do you do to need 8GB of RAM?

Kingston will work just the same as Crucial. You will notice a big difference, well worth it.

I ordered 8GB for my 2.93GHz 17" MacBook Pro a few days ago. £60 inc. delivery from America (ebay).

If it is the right spec and will work in your machine it won't make any difference what brand it is. Only really matters if you're building a gaming rig and are looking to overclock etc.

I don't know what brand it'll be, but I can let you know how I get on when it arrives (prob the end of the week I hope).

Lots of apps open at once, Photoshop, Illustrator, virtual machines. 4GB is quickly exhausted.

Has it made a noticeable difference? Did you go from 4 to 8gb?

VMware?

For the cost it's well worth upgrading to 8GB.

Just for you I have fired up XP in VMware (I'm a web developer so keep a handful of VM's literally for browser testing).

I also have Photoshop open with a few ~2000x1000 psd's open (incidentally currently using 1.07GB), Illustrator, Word for Mac, Typing in Chrome, Thunderbird open with 3 email accounts and 10,000's of emails in, Address Book, Panic Coda, Terminal, Twitter Client, MySQL Workbench and Activity Monitor.

I still have 1.96GB RAM free, have had 0 page outs since I booted (yesterday).

Most importantly, the machine has not noticeably slowed down - at all smile. Well worth it for me.

Edit: Yes, went from 4GB to 8GB.
