Returning to previous job.

I have the chance to go back to a place I worked at previously in exactly the same roll as before. It was a very pressurised enviroment but reasonably well paid. I left because I felt it was having a bad effect on my family as I was working long hours alot of the time but since leaving money has got alot tighter and although where I currently work is a lot less hassle I do miss the hussle and bussle some of the time.

Neither job is close to home the current one is 28 miles and the previous one about 31 miles although easier commute as more rural except in snow!

Has anyone else returned to a previous job and did it work out ok?

I would guess that not everything has stood still where you used to work. People and processes change, which may have altered the environment that you once knew, either for the better or for the worse. Why not visit, speak to existing staff, or even return on a probationary period. I would suggest health and happiness come before a larger pay packet. Good luck!

I did once but very early on in my career....left my first proper job for just over a year and was 'invited' back at a slightly more senior level (but that wasn't hard as I was at the very bottom first time round).

It worked out very well for me.

Have never done it personally although I would consider it if the offer suited me.

A friend of mine has left his job & gone back to it on 4 different occasions.

Very nearly did. Left for what I thought was a good career move and left the company on very good terms with the "if it's doesn't work out, get in touch" type of offer. It wasn't working out and so I did get in touch (after about 7 months). Went back for a chat with my old boss and was offered my old position back but it just didn't feel right. As much as the new job wasn't right, nor did it feel right to be going back. Everything seemed different, there was a new chap doing what I used to do so felt a bit uncomfortable even just being introduced to him. Glad I didn't go for it.

Just my opinion but think when you leave, you leave and move on.

Well I've been to have alook and the company seems in much better state than when I left which in the current climate is good. Money is a bit better than what I currently earn but it would also be a good career move as well. I Have a few days to think about it but at the moment im struggling to see much of a down side other than the extra pressure involved. Also i'm going nowhere fast in my current employment so hopefully it would be a good move.

I would struggle to go back - it wouldn't feel right - especially if things were the same

I would only consider it if the role was different or more senior.

I've returned to previous jobs twice but only because I was out of work at the time. I didn't leave either job by choice either, temp work that I later returned to in a permanent role for one and a second temp contract for the other. I was happy to go back to both jobs and people I knew well and I would return to a previous job for better money but more stress if I was in the same position as you.

Briefly:

Job 1: did an apprenticeship, left to go travelling after 4 years.
Job 2: stayed for a couple of years, left when I got a call asking me to return to Job 1.
Job 1: (2nd time) lasted a couple of years then made redundant. Got a call from company asking me to return to Job 2
Job 2: (2nd time) stayed about 3 years before I got a call asking me to return to Job 1.
Job 1: (3rd time) been here about 2.5 years and as happy as Larry

So I've only really had two jobs, but I've left four

Yes I have.
The place where I am now - I left a few years ago due to several disagreements that I knew I would never get resolved: while I liked the job I kept pushing for more responsibility and being ignored, while there was a certain amount of favouritism/general chaos going on, so I left for what I thought was a better job with better prospects and a higher level of responsibility, then got made redundant. At this point I was considering a complete change in career but had no idea where to start and was fast running out of cash, so I knocked on the door and asked for my old job back. It worked out ok, I got promoted after a few months and the job has improved somewhat. It always pays to leave a job on good terms.
