Pleas excuse the numptyness of this post. Until recently the mobile phone world has largely passed me by. I don't make a lot of calls or texts so I've been happy not to have a contract phone and just use one on PAYG. I have a Nokia 6030 classic that I use mostly as a MP3 player.

However one can't help noticing the ever increasing functionality of today's smart-phones. So much so that I have convinced myself that I want one. I'm thinking for MP3, sat nav, camera, web browser in the sitting room etc.

So I have a couple of queries that perhaps the PH wise-ones could help with.

1) If I buy a new unlocked Desire HD on Ebay can I just put my PAYG sim (vodafone) in and carry on using it as normal.

I might consider a £15 contract but don't really want to go over that. SO:

2) Vodafone don't as far as I can see a sim only plan that includes a data download component for phones other than Iphone or Blackberry. So could I sign up for a £15 plan that include a phone and then swap the sim into a an unlocked Desire HD. Then sell the new phone to offset the cost of the smart phone.

I hope than make sense.

Your sim will work, but the data charges will cripple you unless you go contract with a data allowance. Smart phones are connected to the internet at all times. When you are at home they could use your wireless network, but out and about you will need a data allowance.

I've no idea about PAYG add ons, but it must be available.

You could go down the contract route, and yes you could sell the phone you get to offset your costs.

I was in the same boat when changing phone. £10 a month with o2 (simplicity plan were you can pick between data, texts and calls at various prices) which gives me data and calls, the tenner covers my texting.

Paid £160 for the phone, sony ericsson something or other.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm currently kind of stuck with Vodafone. They are the only network that covers both my home and work locations. But they do appear to be a bit stingy on data allocations.

Only if you set them up that way.

I only connect mine as and when I want or need to. And I decide whether to use wifi or 3g etc.
