Dear all
My son is on the lookout for a good gaming laptop.

Needs to carry 4 gig ram at the very least, preferable at least 6,...and have a very advanced graphics engine. Everything else is open to scrutiny.

Budget , ideally between £1200 and £1500 , might go higher if justified, but £1700 is the line in the sand. All makes considered except Macs.

We did think we had found a possible solution...Asus G73JH . But seems to be out of production.

Any suggestions anyone? Especially hands on advice.

Cheers!

I found that with alienware you pay a lot for the name and mood lighting. The dell xps laptops are nice though.

Probably need a little more consideration than 6gig + good graphics.
Good graphics will only be a factor on the larger screen resolutions e.g. a mobility Radeon 5145 (80 stream cores etc) should be able to run most games at full detail (though not AA) on the weak 1360x768 display but will struggle on a full HD (1920x1080) 17inch.
To be honest if timing isn't urgent I'd wait to see what AMD do with their fusion chipsets but if you need one sooner rather than later this will cope admirably:

I recently got an i7 quad core dell XPS.

its fine for games i dabble in these days - being the odd game of Heroes of Newerth or League of Legends..

HL2 runs fine on it as well.

spec is roughly - i7 quad core / 4gb mem / 2gb gfx card / 15" monitor (use a tv - dire refresh rate of 60hz but its better than squinting! haha)

as i say - highly recommended, but i dont really push it with gaming. 750 quid or something i paid just before christmas.

I think the G73JH became the G73JW. The Radion 5870 was replaced by NVidia GTX460 and there were a few other tweaks.

Ive got the JW and it goes well. Can play most games at full 1920 x 1080 with full detail, though it does stumble on Crysis a little at those settings. Its well built, quiet and pretty much the nicest laptop Ive had.

These people have it in stock sometimes.... http://www.asuslaptop.co.uk/products.php?idpart=G7... or its available on Amazon but teh prices do vary on there.

A gaming laptop at £1700! Jesus wept. Does it absolutely have to be a laptop? You can get an absolutely killer desktop for that, or does he like to play Crysis in the middle of a field?

Damn lucky son I say.
Any reason why it has to be a laptop? For the kind of money you are prepared to pay he could have a desktop PC with a massive screen that a lot of people would be jealous of (and much better for playing games on).

Thanks all, I'll have a dig around the suggestions...see whats what. Must say, there does seem to be fairly restricted options...I wonder if heat causes some manufacturers to shy clear.

Lordy....laugh Its not my cash (answering another)....Its his.

The boy works as a self employed contractor to a big heating company and travels all over the UK. So aside the business use, the laptop is usefull for keeping in touch with home, and the gaming keeps him off expensive Hotel net access and out the boozers.

So not cheap , but cheaper than what not having it around could be. He misses hearth and home..but the money is good.

He's away on hols for a few weeks, and his current machine has been damaged (no, don't ask how laugh )...so he needs some options for when he gets back.

Cheers.

lol I'm sure most of us thought you were talking about a teenager the way you were referring to him.
It might be worth you having a look at the Overclockers forum or a PC customising forum where you will find the real pros spending big bucks.

The big problem with gaming laptops isn't necessarily processor of GPU horsepower, it is cooling. Definitely have a good read of the specialist forums (not THAT sort of specialist forums...) and see which ones are prone to overheating.

One more for the list are these people http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/laptop-computers/4/ I haven't bought anything from there myself, but some PHers have mentioned it before and seem happy.

If you buy anything from Overclockers, don't expect anything in the way of support.

Ah well you see, when you have brought them up , they always are children , even when they are pushing 30! laugh

Your Dad is very likely the same with you. Mind you, the man child , just gets older, it never grows up. Too bloody boring that , eh? biggrin

Anyhow, thanks all for suggestions and links. Must say one of the MSI machines looks good, really good spec and still under 1200 sovs....No heat probs either..according to a review I read. Not the only interesting proposition though.

Well, we'll see, I'll pass on everything to him....His cash, his decision at the end of the day.

Thanks folks.

I'm in the same boat, I'm going away with work for several weeks and want something to play games on plus something small. I'm currently loking at teh m11x, m15x and new xps15, I am however leaning towards the m11x just for portability.

A friend bought the 11" alienware. It's really amazing, but I would only want to play games using a TV via HDMI or a Laptop though.

Ive got the M11x and find it great. Its really not much larger than a netbook but plays Modern Warfare at 1366 x 738ish with all the details turned up at 35 fps upwards. But if you want to just use it like netbook for a bit of browsing or wot not you can still get 4 hours or so on a charge.

The screen is a bit small for long gaming sessions and I have found myself hunched over it squinting if Ive been playing for an hour so but its not too bad.

One thing to consider is the lack of buuilt in optical drive so bear in mind you'll be lugging one round with you.

I didnt get mine from Dell but from a refurb outlet. I think it was around £400 less than the Dell price but did have a Swedish keyboard, its not hugely different to a UK one though.

Thanks, that what i was looking for. Where I will be I'll ahve access to nice screens to utilise so the small screen isn't that much of a worry.

Having been a recent customer of pcspecialist.co.uk, I can only sing their praises. I got a highly spec'ed lappy for several hundred quid cheaper than any of the regular names could put together. Well worth a look. Mine cost about 800 quid. My mind boggles at what they could put together for your son's budget...
