Free email - Which one to go for..........

I've got a few free email accounts.... and 3 of my own domains.... (which requires me to have a hosting account which I don't actually need)

I've decide I am going to keep one gmail.com account for SPAM signups and create a new one for "real" email that I'll migrate everything over to.

I'd need the "real" one to synch with my iPhone calendar.

Question is, which provided to go for? Another gmail or something like yahoo?

gmail every time for me.
Some are concerned about privacy with google but the product works well.
IME Yahoo and MSN are hateful things.

Really? Almost never been an issue for me - been using it since beta. I have +5GB email in my primary account held on their servers too.

try google apps, its free for less than 50 accounts, and you can set-up all your emails to be delivered to one box, and send back from the individual addresses, plus you already know the product.

might seem over kill, but for various reasons i have 11 email addresses and i monitor them all in one google apps set-up.

Not sure I'm with you here. Are you talking about different addresses at the same domain or multiple domains?
Multiple domains would be nice or multiple @gmail.com addresses would be too but [e-mail] - meh.

Have a look at GMX Mail too - I've just set an account up for free with them and its excellent. I can also set other mail accounts to be checked from its web interface too (and yes its pop3/smtp also)

Another vote for Gmail here, especially as you can use the + trick

For those who haven't heard of it, what you can do is add extra words to your email addresses by putting the first part of your normal email address followed by + and then another word before the @gmail.com bit.

For example: [e-mail] becomes [e-mail], [e-mail], MrWill+Newsletters.com and as many other combinations as you want. (not my real email address, before anyone has any clever ideas)

These will all be delivered to [e-mail] like normal, but the different addresses allow you to sort them in to the relevant folders automatically, including binning them the moment they are delivered if that is what you want to do.

Extremely handy for keeping spam levels down without resorting to multiple email accounts and something I can thoroughly recommend.

one very silly question though, from a non IT person - i have a hotmail account. can i open a g mail account and get it to send all e-mails to my hotmail address to my g mail account?

reason for asking, my hotmail account has a rather non-descript and "old" address. would be useful to change it to something more upto date, but without having to notify all those people who have the address to update it to a new one

This is what I did when I migrated from Hotmail to Gmail. Works like a charm, I only access Hotmail every week or so to clean out the Spam folder.

Got myself setup yesterday and had a clean up. Much easier to use now, and with a more appropriate e-mail address!
