I've got a genius bar appointment later this morning, going to moan about my iPhone getting worse and worse in terms of dropping wi-fi, calls, signals and slowing down etc.

It was actually the first iPhone4 to be sold on release day, so it's definitely one of the early ones!

Does anyone have any experience of them replacing their phone when you complain?

My bro and Dad have just got new iPhones, apparently they have been a little bit modified since the first one? But it's so much quicker!

Cheers all!

ETA: Sorry, I should have mentioned it's an iPhone4, I didn't make that clear.

Replaced mine yesterday. Had a broken mute switch and a crack round the docking port.

Was one of the first 3GS and 260 odd days out of warranty. So had to pay £139 for a replacement. Which isn't the end of the world, but not ideal given I'll be getting an iPhone 5 in the summer.

I've made a list of issues for them;

- Home button is temperamental and sometimes doesn't work;

- Proximity sensor sometimes doesn't work, so I hang up on people or put them on hold;

- Drops wi-fi, and sometimes doesn't pick it up;

- Drops calls and 3G connection very easily;

- Freezing, apps crashing and rebooting;

- Camera sometimes doesn't work, shutter stays closed.

Now I've had iPhones since day one of the original iPhone being released, I use iMac, iPad, Macbook Pro, iPod etc and this is the first issue I've ever had with any of them.

I have one of the early 2G's too and also have problems 1, 3 and 5 that you list. I'll be interested to find out how you get on. I know for about £70 they will just replace it (so a 'Genius' told me). But I was wondering, if you paid more would they give you a later phone?

As far as I know, you can't upgrade. And as I mentioned in my post above they charged £139. Though if yours is the 2G, I guess that would be around £70.

Mine's still in it's warranty period so I certainly won't be paying to replace it!

Yeah, sorry about that guys - there's me suggesting I've got an original iPhone and I'm concerned because my bro's new one is quicker.

I have read horror stories of them replacing it with a worse one! I presume they would take mine off me and give me someone elses who had their replaced, sneaky!

One of our chaps had an issue with his iphone 4 not retaining a charge. After an overnight charge up to 100% it would be flat within 6-8 hours with no use, just sitting there.
O2 said that was acceptable and wouldn't replace it until I spoke to our account manager. The replacement was not a great deal better, maybe 10-12 hours.
He then took it to Apple store who replaced it gratis and suggested he configured as new phone rather than just restore as before. Worked a treat - likely it was a misbehaving app rather the phone, but all's fine now.

I've tried that - which presumably they can tell from plugging it into their diagnostic stuff?

My appointment is 11:40 - I'm just writing up my list of issues and doing a backup, I really hope they replace it!

Don't know which Genius you spoke with Mark, but he's not much of a one, since all OOW repairs are flat rated at £149 irrespective of phone model or age.
Now, I've bought the missus her first touchscreen phone - a 3GS since she needed the better camera, etc, and although it was 30 odd days beyond warranty, the store Manager very generously allowed a goodwill replacement in this instance.
The genius, who claimed he had full autonomy, refused it, so a chat to the head genius the next day, who had to refer it to the manager, resulted in the missus having a brand spanking new 3GS.

So Apple can and do try to make sure their customers are happy ones, and like myself, your Apple models history should work to your advantage, if you need to call upon authority.

Have you done the above - restored, and set up as new phone?
You'd lose text conversations unfortunately, but that's better than persevering with terminated calls 5 mins into them.
That said, are you sure it's not a network/SIM issue?
Might be worth having a replacement SIM sent out, and chat with CS chap or chapess to make sure there's nothing on your account that shouldn't be.

If it is hardware related somehow, then have a chat with Apple Support or book the appointment.

It's £139, not £149.

Just had mine replaced for same reason smile

Went in a few weeks ago with similar complaints but they weren't very helpful, went back today and got it swapped out over the counter straight away with no waiting or prior appointment. Seems to be pot luck who you see on the day I guess.
