When I read the first post I also wondered if a warning had been sounded and if not, why not??

Highly unlikely. I'd imagine this all took places in a few seconds during which the OP's Mrs was concentrating on bringing the car to a safe halt thereby minimising any subsequent injuries to the cyclist even though they were the result of his own actions.
