I think all alcoholic drink has to be sold in measures, so he could sell it if he poured the beer into a half pint glass first and then tipped into the pint glass after. I don't see any reason why you couldn't pour the Smirnoff Ice into the glass as well, but the customer would have to buy the whole bottle.

It was probably his way of trying to get out of pouring a pain in the arse drink, that, as you say is likely to be drunk by those who will end up in a ruck.

Disclaimer.
I have racked my memory from when I worked in the pub trade. I could be talking complete horlicks, but then what's new on this website. hehe
technically I think there is an issue with serving half pints in pint glasses that don't have a half pint line ... it's also a matter of 'company policy' and the bullst lines that are spun by 'trainers' and 'damagers' to the troops o nthe ground

A bar person can sell you as much booze in one go as long as it is x whatever measure.

This will soon change i'm sure and a "max units per purchase" will be applied.

But for now as long as the person is not drunk you may serve them and if they become drunk they must be removed from the premises.

Must admit in the pub I worked in for 25 years if someone asked for a treble Vodka (35ml per measure here in NI) he would be refused. Not worth the hassle of them getting pissed and having to deal with them.

Out of interest, why do you think they would ultimately end up drinking less just because they had to buy two or three separate drinks rather than one triple?

Don't you just end up alienating them and putting in a strop before they've even managed to get sloshed?

That's not how it works and here is an example.

Punter comes in after having a few across the road. Seems fine. Gets served a triple ends up pissed.

If he was served a single then returned to the bar for another then the staff would be able to judge if he was drunk or not. He might then be "ok" for another.

It is not only illegal to serve a drunk person but also illegal to have a drunk person in your pub.

IMHO anyone who comes in and asks for a treble in the first place is likely to be of nusiance value later in the evening anyway.
