When I turned up for mine there were more women than men - so that started the jibes! It soon changed to about 50/50 when all arrived.
The course was simply an exercise in money-making, full stop. Everyone got that, all 40 of us at 90 quid each, and a lost day's pay.
Three quarters of us done for 35 to 37 in a 30 limit.
We were third batch that day, with I think 2 or 3 more lots to follow. Money, money, money!

The real shock was when some of us asked where all the other people were 'going'?
'Oh, they're the mobile course'.
'Sorry, you what?'
'They're the one's who have opted for the course instead of the fine for using mobiles'.

We were all gobsmacked.
Not one of us realised if you are caught using a mobile whilst driving you can have the option of a course and no points.

No wonder they can't put a stop to it!

If you all stopped going on the courses, their little racket would dry up!

It really is essential to stop accepting the offer of the courses or scammers will be EVERYWHERE. I guess at a certain volume not only will the self serving empire become fully sustainable but there will be a juicy surplus to help keep other parts of the bloated public sector going. In practical terms for drivers that means; cameras everywhere enforcing every thing that can be recorded visually.

BE AFRAID this is FAR worse than the old corruption of 'hypothecation' ( aka Safety Camera Partnerships) as most people are actually relieved (the first time) to be 'allowed' to avoid the points....

If drivers did not break the law in the first place then that would also stop the courses from happening

Thanks for your input.
But the thing is that its basically a good idea, it gives you a warning to mend your ways and to a lot of people who don’t think about there driving good advice.

On my course one person though it was ok to text because they knew where the buttons were and didn’t have to take there eyes off the road, another didn’t realise that it took longer to do an emergency stop in the wet.

Others didn’t know what ABS was.
I just feel that more effort should be put into the quality of instructors, and the content.
Also as to the price this £25 above the fine so is ok but all profits should go directly to road safety projects.

Some of the people contributing to this course are ADI's who are not employed by the 'authorities'.

They are self employed instructors who are contracted in to support the courses when they run. They have to be paid.

In most cases the pay for their input to the courses is lower than the rate they get when teaching learners.

Anything which makes drivers think seriously about their driving has to be a good thing

Whether those drivers actually do anything about it is another matter because no course or person can make another think differently unless that driver wants to in the first place

The above is one (apart from price) of the main reasons that drivers do not choose to take up any post test training

On the course I did the Geordie Grahame (Hertfordshire) tt said "Trucks take longer to stop because the tyres can't get grip on the road, not because of the weight of the vehicle. It has nothing to do with the weight". confused

Erm...

This set a precedent for the whole course and this typical jobs worth tit.
He was condescending, patronising and could have done with some lessons on dealing with social situations!

To be fair the other instructor, another Grahame, was great and even laughed at jokes that no doubt he'd heard hundreds of times before. smile

We had some characters in attendance and our table was running an innuendo list. We had "enter my box" and "I've been done up that road" as top contenders and both from the same woman. hehe

One guy I know is paid £17 per hour.

For teaching learners he charges £23 ph.

OK on the course he is not using fuel, but he does it as it is; A) A steady stream of income. B) He believes that it will improve drivers so improve safety.

The 'problem' in my experience was that there was not time allowed for adequate discussion, indeed we were warned at the beginning that they could not allow discussion outside what they were going to tell us due to time constraints.

I did try to ask a few questions, and was humiliated into silence as a result. The tutor who did this was female.

I was told that ALL cars on the road today have ABS, Power Steering, Assisted Brakes and Airbags. I drive 2002 Lotus Elise, and told them this does not have any of these trick parts. Her answer was they will be there, I just will not be aware, that is why I ended up on the course.............

And she wasn't even fit!

I'm heading for Luton for my AA run course this coming Thursday.

I look forward to sharing my experiences. I will find it difficult to resist debating any points of contention that come up. I shall try and avoid ending up on the naughty step though.

Thanks for that smile.

Im more a lurker than a poster though.

I did have one other issue with the course which I raised with the male tutor (who was very good and quite humorous) which was all the advice on green motoring. If I want to drive around with a boot full of bricks and my car at 7000 rpm as long as im under the posted limit why should it be an issue?

As I said to him, surely your remit is to reduce mph not increase mpg.
Along similar lines the tutors on my course couldnt comprehend my idea that i may have been speeding to increase my MPG and insisted i would get better MPG driving at 30mph in 3rd gear than i would at 55 in 6th.

Depends on the car, 30mph in 3rd gear mine is doing 2000rpm, 55mph in 6th is about 1900rpm so in 6th i'm travelling a greater distance for fewer revs which should result in better mpg.

its about 1400rpm in the 118d, but i cant really test the theory as i use the motorway for 95% of my commute.

Also reminded me of the other thing they said, driving faster doesnt get you there any quicker. made me laugh as on my commute i can make upto 15 minutes if i drive faster. They seem to just blindly assume everyone only ever travels a mile or two on a trip and cant make up more than a few seconds...
