Worst (for posterity) were Maestro pandas with a gearbox made of porridge and a steam engine.
The MG Maestro 2 litre EFI had a great (Honda) gearbox - I assume you're referring to one of the cheaper models.

Yes, the 1.6 tractor engined model (approx 3 BHP) with airfix interior, wheel trims and roof lights that detatched themselves and liked to bounce along the road (happened to me).

Replaced by 1.6 diesel Astra's which were sublime by comparison

These are the ones for me, quick and fairly practical.

the curent 1.3cdti astra's are absolutley terrible cars. Far far worse than the focus they replaced

Ours are the previous shape ones, 58 plate style 1.7's.

Although we have Vauxhall Insignias now for our pandas which is nice.

The later Rovers had a major problem ... the roofline was too low for certain headwear of senior military officers in full uniform.

Errr......: "The best Police car in the UK past or present?"

Now My memory of Police cars in the UK might be a little hazy, but I'm pretty sure no force in the UK ever ran one of these!

As a lad in the seventies, I was blown away by an uncle (serving with Devon & Cornwall police) showing me an Opel Commodore GSE. This was clearly on trial but looked quite exotic when compared with the other patrol cars. Has anyone got any pictures of this car (in livery)? Does anyone else recall this car?

In these days of budget slashing the picture could just be of GMP's next round of "new"cars!

Sorry the pic is only a model but the best I could find.

In 1980 I worked for J Blake & Co in Liverpool, main Ford dealers. We supplied what I understood to be the last 50 Escort RS2000's produced to Merseyside Police. As the model was going out of production we had these in storage for about 8-9mths at the depot in Brownlow Hill, as they didn't see anything else available as being as good.

And yes....................we did take them for a 'spin' round town prior to delivery, but that's another story!
