If the hotel don't want cheapskates, they may take action against cheapskates so that they warn other possible future cheapskate visitors to stay away...

What if you'd bought a bottle of bubbly as a gift for someone?

Suppose you had been given a nice bottle of single malt by your wife for a birthday present? Nothing wrong with a nightcap? Not exactly "cheapskate"?

Manager's discretion would be used I'm sure.
In terms of their policy, there is something wrong with a nightcap, and they might charge you for the equivalent at the bar.

Can you let us know which hotel / chain this happened in? I stay in hotels most weeks on business and have never came across anything like this.

Cheapskate hotel doesn't want cheapskate customers. Even I, cheapskate that I am, would avoid such f kwittery and find a proper place.

Shocking stuff. A rule like that is quite out of the ordinary so I'd expect it to be made explicitly clear at the booking stage.
As mentioned, make a song and dance on trip advisor to at least warn others.

You should have drunk the booze sooner.
That's where you went wrong.

Never heard of this before.
For many years I used to stay in hotels Tues, Weds and Thurs every single week, so would often pick up a bottle of red in the supermarket so I could have a quiet drink in my room whilst watching TV in the evening.
Not everyone wants to order via room service or at the bar...
Of course, if hotels really wanted to discourage this, then not charging £4+ for a pint of cheap fizzy larger might encourage people to frequent their bars.

That's a disgrace. I'd be very interested in hearing the outcome of this.

I'd get some very ripe cheese and possibly some seafood and get it confiscated at the beginning of a three week stay. Will they give me the original food back when I checkout?
