OP has yet to answer the 2 key questions

How much booze and where do he leave it.

If he left a bottle of whiskey or six pack on top of his pillow then hotel has every right to remove and return on check out per their T&Cs, out of order if they went through bags

So if the T&Cs state you have to give the manager a blow job does that make it legally binding?

It's obvious they have had problems in the past, maybe with people buying only soft drinks at the bar and then popping upto the room to fill with tipple of choice. Hence loosing on bar takings.

Confiscating drink from the rooms is a bit out of order though!

If they do not want the type of people in the hotel that do that then why take booking for hen and stag parties?

Have you seen the price of drinks in a nice hotel? We're not all made of money.

Was at a wedding recently, a very good friend. We stayed the night before to have a few drinks and catch up with chums.

It was £9 for a large white wine.

So for the evening of the wedding, and so as to not bankrupt our friend (he was picking up the bar tab for the reception) we went to the nearest supermarket and filled my car boot with every type of booze known to man, left it unlocked and told everyone to help themselves.

Was I been a cheapskate or was I being the intelligent one, not wanting to be fked up the bum by the hotel knocking out cheapo plonk at £9 a glass to a captive audience.

That's incredibly pie key.

Under what authority do they have to 'confiscate' anything from anyone?
The T+Cs, presumably, that you agree to abide by when you book the room.

I wouldn't give them my business though.
But that is not a law is it? just T&C.

OP, has your battery charged yet?

It's been nearly 2 hours since your last post. Not a very good advert for the iPhone, is it.

A lot of us seem to be assuming that this policy is to make guests pay bar prices. Could it not be there to discourage guests from having massive parties and pissups in their rooms and disturbing other guests, and instead just stagger noisily back to their room and pass out, when the club party is done.

Still a ridiculous rule.

If OP had checked in with a massive group, I agree that could be an issue. But I don't think he did.

Oh dear, that is an utter sthole.

ETA we had a corporate retreat there about six years ago and it is probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The place trades cynically on the reputation of its golf course. The rooms look as if they were last updated in the 1980s. The food is low quality and badly prepared and the whole place looks tired.

Well, they wouldn't know if he's associated with other guests or not, and once the management apply a policy to cover a particular problem, staff are going to just enforce it on everyone anyway, but to be clear either way, I am not attempting to justify the rule or the enforcement, it's the daftest thing I ever heard in a hotel.

It's a me said:
Belfry T&c's

Food & Drink
Only food and drink purchased from the hotel may be consumed on the premises. If food or beverages are brought into the hotel for consumption, a charge will be made equal to the hotel’s selling price for that or an equivalent product, which shall be in the absolute determination of the hotel. The Duty Manager may also confiscate food or beverage until your day of departure and return it to you.
Theyre looking to protect their bar profits by selling off licence bottles at bar measure prices! I didnt think that this still happened - it used to be common with racecourse catering.

From a couple of posts on here, it's not really a surprise that hotels introduce such rules - 2 people have posted that they'd run 'bars' from the boot of their cars at group functions.

It's one thing to enjoy a quiet drink or two in your room by yourself or with your partner - it's quite another setting up to actively deprive the business of their bar revenue.

Often a group booking deal / function price is heavily discounted on the basis that the party will spend at the bar - by running bars from your car in the car park, you're only going to force up prices of the next group booking.

(I do group bookings several times a year and am always astounded at the deals you can do - but that's always because they factor in their bar takings)
