Zachlain said: It is possible that there have been many people who outrun police helicopters and never get caught but that doesnt make good tv, so they omit this from the programs (after all we all like the bad guys to be caught in the end). This then introduces bias and makes it appear that everyone will be caught once the helicopter is bought out. I've no idea why she signed up for this, but my missus gets a facebook report from Cheshire Police each day and it'll often talk about car thefts where the chopper has been scrambled and it only now and again mention arrests being made.

There was a ram raiding gang some time ago who used a stolen Lotus Carlton as a getaway car, I think they did outrun the helicopter at least once.

surely outrunning a police copter must be pretty difficult. they have an air speed of about 140knots or there abouts so roughly around 150mph ground speed with the ability to go as the crow flies, even in a seriously quick car it would be nearly impossible to outrun the copter even on a motorway.

What tends to happen is the police stop when the idiot driving approaches those speeds, mainly for the safety of the wider public. allthough all my knowledge comes from police TV shows

Had a pursuit where a young lad was on a stolen moped. Very short chase and he decamped into heavy growth next to a busy railway line. Because of the danger of trains BTP officers called and the police helicopter.
Anyway, 10 minutes later fella is found by the helicopter, officers directed in and he is arrested.
He asked how we found him and was told the helicopter cameras found. He told us we were talking crap as he knows that if you hold your breath the helicopter can't see you.
